The thing I enjoyed most about the #SDPConference yesterday is that people actually listened to you. They didn’t always agree of course. It’s just that they looked squarely at you and you could almost hear the cogs turning as they processed your words. No glazed eyes. Refreshing.
#SDPConference Thanks all, great day. And thanks Tom for the beers. Really nice folks. London was buzzing. Somehow I made it back to Essex on my bike. Rode from Angel to Stoke Newington along the canal then up the River Lea to Tottenham Hale... without falling in once. 😁 Night X
#SDPConference. Lionel Shriver capped it off with a lucid, engaging speech about how the Democrats in the USA, and the Tories and Labour in the UK, have gone badly awry. She ended pessimistically - saying the SDP are too small to change anything. But everyone else seemed buoyant!
The intellectual wing of the centre-right counter-narrative?
If so, it’s much needed but has to be allied to a political party & movement that can deliver a hefty political punch. #SDPConference
(I would have attended had the govt not required me to quarantine.)
I was really impressed by this gathering. Serious and smart people who deeply care about the future of their community. It is only a matter of time before they make a much needed impact on British society.
#SDPConference Lionel Shriver the final speaker... but my phone’s about to die. I’ll update you on her, and offer a summary, when I get home later. Thanks for joining me folks. X
#SDPConference Scotsman John Lloyd defending the union. He got a big laugh when he spoke of Alex Salmond “working for Russia Today on the principle that my enemy’s enemy is my paymaster”. 😆
#SDPConference Erik Kauffmann talking about “cultural socialism” and how it is undermining free speech. He says cultural socialism is not about “redistribution” but about conformity. But socialism was never about redistribution. It was only ever about conformity - and control.
#SDPConference Mohammed Abbasi is up now, a Muslim free speech champion. He says “freedom of expression is a fundamental human right” and is fundamentally about *listening*. That’s a very interesting and compelling point. Engage with people... or you’ll provoke extremism. Agreed.
#SDPConference Patrick O’Flynn up now. “The Conservatives have one value above all others - being in power.” Ouch. I think that’s harsh. Until we reform Britain’s socialist public sector, the Tories will always be shifty - trying to deal with a loony executive that hates them.
#SDPConference Claire Fox is blazing away at 1000mph about the coronapanic debacle and COP26. Hard to keep up! I don’t disagree with much of what she’s saying, but it’s all a little... intemperate. As I keep saying, more sober analysis is needed to untie the Covid political knot.
#SDPConference Leader William Clouston. He kicks off by saying “The particular pathology that affects us here in Britain is indifference”. And he goes on to defend economic nationalism and an industrial strategy, asking “Is it too much to put our country first?”

#SDPConference Had a nice lunch with (it turns out) two fellow writers. The guy was a fiction writer - lockdown sceptic. Massively to his credit, he admitted he’d had a “good” lockdown, but his heart was with low paid key workers like me who went through “torture”. Rare empathy.
#SDPConference Frank Furedi talking about how “non-judgementalism” leads to “indifference”. He’s right of course. Stick up for Western culture, or you lose Western culture. A culture doesn’t just drop out of the sky.
#SDPConference Starkey gets a standing ovation. His main point: institutions should not have values. Professional institutions are the problem, he says, because they end up imposing uniformity on their members. Values are for people, not organisations. Very thought-provoking.
#SDPConference “GPs are as entitled as the worse members of the French Ancien Régime” - David Starkey. He is on fire here. Brilliant.
#SDPConference “The absolute catastrophe is the professionalisation of politics... They are a monopoly.” - David Starkey.
#SDPConference Starkey talking about “the abandonment of the notion of truth”. Hear hear. That’s my own personal bugbear, hence my insistence on holding lockdown sceptics to account over the true causes of the coronapanic debacle. And of course holding Covid loons to account too.
#SDPConference Met one of my Twitter followers! I think he thought I would chastise him for being anonymous. (I was merciful.) Rod Liddle speaking now, introducing David Starkey - who was recently “subjected to a burst of psychotic outrage”. Some great characters on the SDP team
