On the second day of #Shitmas, there's nowhere left to rent,
and we starve on dis-ability,
"Average Canadian rent price hits new high for sixth consecutive month: report
The average asking price for a rental unit in Canada reached $2,178 last month, a 9.9 per cent year-over-year increase and continuing a trend that has seen asking rents hit new highs for six months in a row.
That's according to the latest rental price report released by https://t.co/chL4bHOw6k and Urbanation, analyzing monthly listings from the former's network. The findings show while October's annual rate of rent growth in Canada was down from the 11.1 per cent jump in September, it still marked the second fastest annual increase of the past seven months."

on the first day of #Shitmas, we starve on dis-ability;
"Like Scrooge, many Americans believed that the âunworthyâ poor â those who were judged to have caused their own misery â belonged in prison or the workhouse, where the conditions were anything but humane. The one group of destitute individuals that elicited universal sympathy was impoverished children.
People concerned about poverty were encouraged to donate to churches or charitable institutions rather than giving directly to the poor.
A January 1844 article in the New York Tribune advised that if all the money wasted on unnecessary Christmas trifles was ârightly appropriated ⊠Pauperism and its attendant miseries could be eliminated.â An 1853 editorial in the same newspaper ran with the headline, âDO NOT GIVE TO STREET BEGGARS.â Giving directly to the poor was believed to encourage beggary.
The New York Times expressed similar sentiments. An 1854 editorial asserted that money contributed to worthy organizations âwill find where the misery is.â  The paper encouraged its readers to give to âthose excellent institutions, in whose hands, if you place a dollar, you do what, individually, you could not make five dollars do.â
Charitable giving was on its way to becoming a well-oiled yet impersonal machine. Large Christmas dinners for the poor at New Yorkâs Madison Square Garden served up to 20,000 people at a time as the wealthy looked on as spectators. But is this how charity should be administered?"

"This next stage should be a sprint, not a marathon.
In the decades leading up to the #Canada #Disability #Benefit, the disability sector rightly argued that people living with disabilities urgently needed more financial support from our governments to meet their basic needs. People living with disabilities must contend with higher costs of living and multiple barriers to employment. Social assistance is woefully inadequate and has been for a generation. People with disabilities live in poverty at disproportionate rates, in no small part because as a society we have failed to honour their right to an adequate standard of living.
Yet, the current implementation plan targets the end of 2024, at the earliest. Why should we wait a year and a half (or more) to get the Canada Disability Benefit up and running?
We should be aiming to get the regulations settled and money Screw allocated in the 2024 federal budget, which we can expect by early spring.
Our federal government has #demonstrated that it can work at #speed. For example, at the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic, it responded swiftly and effectively with the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (#CERB) and other types of financial supports to ensure that people could forego wages to stay at home. The pandemic caught nearly everyone by surprise, and the government had very little time to plan its immediate response. Despite this, by and large, CERB worked. People had a fighting chance to pay for rent and groceries while staying home to avoid spreading illness. The federal government made a decision to act urgently and put resources behind it."

A Nov. 28 accounting of five years' worth of the department's lapsed dollars was obtained by CBC News under the Access to Information Act.
Other departments have also come under fire in recent months for failing to spend promised dollars, including:
Veterans Affairs, which cumulatively lapsed $1.1 billion in the seven years to 2013.
Foreign Affairs, which failed to spend almost half of the $129 million budgeted for "strengthening security at missions abroad" in 2013-14.

"Decline of charitable giving in Canada:
A recent report from Canada Helps has revealed donations and the number of donors are declining, despite increased demand from charities. To discuss the current state of giving during this holiday season, Nicole Danesi of Canada Helps joins Antony Robart."
Link to video:
https://t.co/rBSsgmPQpH
"This significant drop can be attributed to many factors, from unemployment and economic uncertainty, to the cancellation of in-person fundraising events. However, the pandemic has also exacerbated existing trends. The 2021 Giving Report indicates that fewer Canadians are donating to charity, and of those who do, Canadians aged 55-plus give twice the amount as those aged 25 to 54.
If Canadians, governments, and charities don't take action to address this trend, the loss to our communities will be felt for years to come.
Charities are essential to communities and quality of life in Canada. They are on the front lines, running food banks, shelters, counselling services, and youth programming. They are doing invaluable medical research, creating art, teaching kids to read, supporting new immigrants, caring for seniors, helping families through illness, helping survivors of abuse start new lives, protecting the environment, and so much more.
Meanwhile, charities are still seen by many as simply intermediaries for transferring gifts from the wealthy to the needy. Yet a 2019 Statistics Canada report showed the charitable sector contributes approximately 8.5 per cent or $169 billion to Canada's gross domestic product (GDP). The sector also employs about 10 per cent of the country's full-time workforce.
The services provided by charities also take a significant burden off governments at all levels, and are vital in building a fair and inclusive Canada."

"Based on the literature reviewed, costs associated with living with a disability appear to consume between Œ and œ of annual household income for individuals or families affected by disability. Extraordinary expenses attributable to disability are estimated in this literature between $100,000 and $3 million (CAD) per capita, depending on the severity of disability and the subsequent requirements for personal care, health care, and specialized housing and equipment. The data on costs to society are considerably more sparse, but a very general estimate based on the information available might be about $30 billion per year for Canada, or $1000 per capita per year.
The literature clearly shows that individuals and families affected by disability experience asset poverty at greater rates than their non-disabled counterparts. Out-of-pocket costs, combined with lost productivity, render many families unable to afford basic household goods and services, let alone to save for the future.
According to Park, Turnbull and Turnbull (2002), a government has at its disposal a number of policy options to address the issue of extraordinary disability-related costs. For example, it could increase the disability tax credit. It could increase incentives for retirement saving, with a provision for intergenerational transfers of those resources. It could make mortgage payments tax-deductible as a means of encouraging home ownership as a fundamental asset. It could extend family medical leave to permit a more active role in the care of a disabled family member. It could extend tax benefits to employers to augment Employee Assistance Programs.
Recent literature however, suggests that Canada is transitioning from the social welfare economy developed in the post-war period to reflect collective values, to an asset-based economy similar to that of our American neighbours (Williams, 2006). Through the accumulation of assets, individual Canadians are being motivated towards ownership and building wealth (Boshara et al., 2006). Rather than ensuring a basic income stream for people with disabilities, as was done in the past, a number of federal policy initiatives are intended to encourage economic self-sufficiency. Pension planning is an example where there has been a steady devolution of responsibility in recent years from state to individuals, with increasing emphasis on private employment- or investment-based options to supplement the governmentâs old age pension (Buckland, 2010).
With regard specifically to disability policy, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD, 2010) has recently evaluated the disability policy environments of its member nations (particularly as they relate to provisions for disabled workers). Using 2007 data, they rated their 28 member countries on the generosity of benefits, and on how actively they promote integration. On the compensation scale, Canada was third from the bottom. Only the USA and Korea were less generous in terms of compensation levels for disabled workers. On the integration scale, Canada scored just below the median... These ratings placed Canada in the lowest cluster, characterized by stringent eligibility criteria, low benefit levels, and under-developed rehabilitation systems."

"Birth alerts are notifications issued by child welfare agencies to local hospitals about pregnant people who they deemed "high-risk." In turn, health-care providers are required to alert welfare authorities when the subject comes to seek medical care or deliver their baby.
The alerts often include directions to take additional action â such as medical testing on the parent or baby, or to prevent the baby from leaving the hospital with the parent. It can lead to newborns being taken away from their parents for days, months or even years.
"They're problematic in the sense that unfortunately they were most often deployed against #Indigenous, #racialized and #disabled parents," said lawyer Tina Yang with Waddell Phillips PC in Toronto. She is helping lead a proposed class-action lawsuit against several Ontario children's aid societies and the province.Â
Ontario ended the controversial practice in 2020, while several other provinces and territories stopped between 2019 into late last year. Quebec is the only remaining province to practise birth alerts.
"It's unconstitutional and illegal," said Yang."

- Segregating students with disabilities into separate schools
- The use of restraint or seclusion as a means of controlling students with disabilities
- Segregating adults and children with disabilities in institutions

On the fifth day of #Shitmas, AKTION T4 MAiD
more homeless deaths,
lost any friends,
nowhere left to rent,
and we starve on dis-ability.
'There is a grave concern that, if assisted dying is made available for all persons with a health condition or impairment ⊠a social assumption might follow (or be subtly reinforced) that it is better to be dead than to live with a disability.â
A recent UK newspaper headline put it more bluntly: âWhy is Canada euthanizing the poor?â
Sadly, this is happening at the same time as Canada is facing a growing healthcare crisis. Exacerbated by two years of COVID restrictions and delays, millions of Canadians are unable to access primary care, and wait times for doctorsâ appointments, surgeries, mental health support, and emergency room visits are among the longest in the developed world.
Since it was expanded, MAID has seen a dramatic upswing, again, exacerbated by COVID-19 restrictions and the inability of too many poor Canadians to access timely and proper healthcare. According to research published in the National Post, 2020 saw a 17% increase in MAID deaths over 2019, disproportionately involving the elderly.
While there are many who support MAID (at least for those for whom death is reasonably foreseeable) there are far too many Canadians receiving lethal injections for treatable illnesses, old-age, or due to their socio-economic conditions.
As such, I donât think it is an overstatement to say Canada is trending dangerously toward killing the poor, the disabled, and the elderly under the guise of âhealthcareâ.'

A reminder that disability and poverty do not take a holiday. For many itâs just another #Shitmas

"If a Canadianâs only affliction was âpoverty,â 27 per cent said they would be fine with legalizing that personâs access to MAID. Another 28 per cent pegged âhomelessnessâ as an appropriate bar to qualify for MAID.
And 20 per cent of respondents were fine with MAID being handed out to anybody for any reason. In other words, one fifth of respondents agreed with the sentiment âmedical assistance in dying should always be allowed, regardless of who requests it.â
Notably, these most absolutist supporters of assisted suicide were pretty evenly distributed among age groups, regions and even political demographics: 20 per cent Conservatives, 20 per cent of NDPers and 22 per cent of Liberals were in the âalways be allowedâ camp."
