Today in #Sikh History: Puran Singh, lovingly given the title of Bhagat by the Sikh masses, passed away in 1992. Bhagat Puran Singh, originally a Hindu named Ramji Das, dedicated his life to caring for the mentally and physically disabled. He was inspired to receive Khandi ki Pahaul (Amrit) after being served graciously in a Gurdwara as a young man. Starting after Partition in 1947, Bhagat Puran Singh cared for those who society most marginalized and set up the Pingalwara Institute, which is still caring for the disabled to this day in Panjab. Bhagat Puran Singh was also an early environmentalist, who advocated for protecting natural habitats and curbing pollution decades before these issues became common. Bhagat Puran Singh was a proud Sikh, who lived the principles of Sikhi in his day to day life. After the Indian government attack on the Darbar Sahib Complex and the subsequent Ghallughara and Battle of Amritsar, he returned his Padam Shri, a civilian honor of the Indian government’s that he had been awarded.
