As the keynote speaker at yesterday FBC’s inter-departmental debating competition, I highlighted the ongoing modernization of the Port of Freetown as a key driver of trade facilitation, economic growth, and national development.
Being an event sponsored by #SLPHA, I underscored improvements in port infrastructure, security, and operational efficiency.
I further noted that recent interceptions of illegal drugs and prohibited items reflect the Port’s vigilance and commitment to combating maritime crime, while emphasizing the importance of collaboration among port stakeholders.
I also highlighted the port sector’s contribution to the economy, including SLPHA’s payment of up-to US$19 million in dividends to the Government of Sierra Leone over the last three years.
I reaffirmed #SLPHA’s commitment to youth empowerment and supporting academic initiatives that build the next generation of leaders.

Sierra Leone Ports and Habour Authority #SLPHA and #GrimaldiShippingCompany confirmed that container alleged to have been found with cocaine in Nigeria left Sierra Leone empty
Sierra Leone Ports and Habour Authority made this clarification in a Press Release
The Authority said it has not received any formal notification from the Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA) confirming these claims and that it has formally requested official information from the #NPA and is awaiting a response.
The release also stated that the shipping company responsible for the container, #Grimaldi has confirmed that the said container left the shores of Sierra Leone empty and was discharged at the Ports and Terminal Multiservices Limited (PTML) Port in Lagos in the same condition (empty).

Sierra Leone Ports and Harbor Authority #SLPHA refutes reports of @RevenueNational over containers that were allegedly smuggled out of the Ports.
After investigation involving the Ports Management and the Association of Clearing and Forwarding Agencies, it was revealed that although Customs Management indicated that the documents for the concerned containers were not processed through the ASYCUDA system, a Customs Release was nonetheless duly authorized and issued by the Customs and Excise Department.
That the Customs Release, which authorized @Ftown_Terminal to commence the clearance process, was dispatched through the standard Customs Way Book.
That the Customs Release presented bore all standard features, including perforations, stamps, and signatures of Customs officers.
That at the time of the investigation, payments were confirmed to have been made to all relevant institutions involved in the clearance process, with the exception of Customs and Excise Department (Customs Duties).
That Physical examination of the containers were properly conducted in the presence of Customs and SLPHA officials and later certified by the Customs and Excise Department.

In an effort to heighten security checks that seek to eradicate or limit the potential import into the country of substances used by youths as drugs, the leadership of #SLPHA, led by @yankubamcie convened a meeting of Port stakeholders including #Customs/NRA, #Scanning, #Concessionaires, #SLP, #RSLAF & #Cargo trackers to develop #operational and #strategic procedures that enhance collaboration, accountability and coordination in the clearance process.

The Ombudsman of #Salone made a courtesy call on the leadership and Mgt of #SLPHA today to familiarize himself with the Authority as well as highlight the constitutional role of his Office, inter alia, #maladministration in civil and public offices.
Whilst the #SLPHA was commended for being committed in protecting workers’ rights and in creating an enabling environment that promotes workers’ morale and prestige, both leaders emphasized the need to create and maintain systemic procedures that support acceptable redress mechanism that would stand the test of time.

Today’s roll-out meeting of the #SLPHA Act, 2023 convened the various Concessionaires at the Port including #AGL, #NSBT and #LSS who handle the container and bulk and break-bulk terminals and cargo tracking notes respectively at SLPHA.
