We also commissioned the #SLTICensus which was a huge project but is worthwhile data for further research and projects.
#ASLINewsli also has an editorial committee now to support @NewsliZoe
#ASLIAGM21
Hope everyone enjoyed the #SLTICensus webinar this morning.
Last day for Jill Henshaw on the ASLI Board, so a bit emotional for her after 4 years!
Always good to get a good BSL pic though!

Thank you to everyone involved @JeminaNapier @rejadam @RobASkinner @HeriotWattBSL @DrChijiokeObasi @drcastone @SprattBSL @wlv_uni and the advisory group too

(Now over to the #ASLIAGM !)
Certain areas of the country are more diverse. We also need more trainers who are more diverse. Can students recognise themselves in the profession?
Also we are a small community and not always seen as a profession, its difficult for people to see themselves there
#SLTICensus
Interesting to see how as interpreters get on in their career they add other skills, mentoring, supervision and training.
#SLTICensus
It would be very useful to get subsidies to encourage people into the profession to fill the gaps. Becoming an interpreter isn’t cheap!
Advice for further research. @DrChijiokeObasi recommends people look at the gaps in the census and questions raised today, there are a lot of further research based on the census. Research doesn’t have to be through a university but do disseminate results via ASLI etc #SLTICensus
We need to look at the potential impact of increasing diversity, be this age, gender, race
An audience member noted that this week there was 3 consecutive days of Asian interpreters on the BBC for the first time ever! So a celebration there.

Over to @drcastone and @DrChijiokeObasi for the Q&A #SLTICensus
@ramonwoolfe asks about the demand side of the profession. What do Deaf people need? And why weren’t the @BDA_Deaf involved.
The BDA were invited but unable to attend at the time. Also are they diverse enough ?
@RobASkinner reflects on the problems with research in such a small community.
@NRCPD approved a new qualification part way through our project so in the future we will offer more BSL options in the #SLTICensus
We missed things like hybrid working too, this is something to add
Recommend everyone reading the recommendations as although many are targeted at organisations, everyone can play their part. #SLTICensus
@rejadam talked about a high level of BSL Interpreters in Bristol, Birmingham and Edinburgh, near universities. There are also pockets around the country with gaps in provision.
It will be interesting to see whether this changes #PostCovid
#SLTICensus
Deaf people have traditionally struggled to qualify but opportunities are now increasing.
There was also a large proportion of people who identify as having a disability. As this may have included deaf participants, it needs further research.
#SLTICensus
@IoCN_1 is a particularly valuable group for developing more visible role models and we have heard from people like Akbar Sikder @BSLFirst who talk about the reasons for certain cultures not recognising BSL Interpreting and Translation as a viable profession.
#SLTICensus
We need to look at this in more detail. Highly visible work is male dominated.
Its also very white dominated. Which is an issue for the whole profession.
#SLTICensus

There is also a higher representation of LGBTQI+ in #SLTI than in the general population which is a positive in terms of diversity.
#SLTICensus
Regarding Deaf Translators, there is more balance in gender but they are predominantly working in London and again a lack of people of colour in the profession. #SLTICensus
@JeminaNapier does a quick overview of the evolution of #SLI #SLT profession. Missionaries to registration and formal qualifications.
Why a #SLTICensus ? Lots of detail and data to collect. We can also compare to the general population this way.
Our chair (until about 1pm today!)Jill Henshaw ready to open the #SLTICensus webinar.
Looking forward to hearing from @HeriotWattBSL @wlv_uni and the university of West of Scotland.

The #SLTICensus is now available for reading/viewing. Check it out via our webpage.

Thank you to all who took part in our #SLTIcensus. We are delighted that 824 participants took part in the study, with 690 completing the survey in full. This is nearly 55% of a possible sample population which is actually a great outcome in survey research terms :-)
