Indeed, this is what we found during our #SO268 cruise through the North #Pacific accumulation area, too: A plastic soup with lots of small creatures amongst #plastic items plus organisms growing on them. => It's mpossible to separate ocean life from debris with unselective nets.

Its incredible how fast these 6 weeks have passed, its already the last sunset of #SO268! Tomorrow, we will go into the port of #Singapore! Sad that this adventure is over but looking forward at the same time to seeing my beloved ones again and touching base 😞☺

#SO268: Yay, 1st round of image analysis completed (5,010)! The biggest surprise is the high biodiversity & large size of animals despite the depth (5200-5900m), compared with the #Arctic seafloor that I am used to. Here are some of my favourites #benthic #deepsea #Pacific #Abyss

Its done, all station work of #SO268 is completed incl. the last #DeepSea camera transect off Japan where we saw the highest amount of #plastic #debris but also a host of of amazing animals, some of which I will share over the next few days as I process the images #Abyss #pacific

#SO268: it's #CephalopodWeek week and thus timely to share an image of this lovely creature, probably a dumbo octopus, which we filmed during one of our OFOS camera deployments in the #Pacific at 5,200 m depth last week! 🤩 #ocean #Cephalopod #deepsea @AWI_Media

#SO268: The countdown starts: we just completed our last multiple corer cast. Thank you @senckenberg for this relieable device with 20 (!) tubes! It enables us to assess #microplastic pollution in undisturbed #deepsea sediments (5,3 km) along with #biogeography of #meiofauna.

#SO268: as we steam to our last station we deploy more #Argo floats for @Scripps_Ocean to maintain #OceanObservation & improve our global data coverage. They measure pressure, conductivity throughout the water column & transmit data via satelite for <5 years! (Video: A. Welsch)
