"If I was born without any straps on my boats, how am I supposed to pick myself up" Everyone cannot be given the same resources/support. Those who are behind the starting line need help getting there first. #so345
I found it sad but interesting that many of the boys prefer incarceration because its cause and effect regarding punishment is much clearer. This raises questions about how effective policing can be if the rules and enforcement of them is essentially arbitrary #so345
(3/3) them to change? However, when they don't change, their behavior is used as proof that we need to maintain the same system that is only worsening the issue. #so345
(⅔) our punitive system. These boys are labeled as criminals by almost everyone around them. "Acting lawfully" does not necessarily aid them. Why would they be motivated to change when the system that is labeling and stigmatizing them does not allow #so345
(⅓)Hypercriminalization of young minorities is not just happening at the criminal justice level. It happens at the level of many institutions, such as schools, communities, and within families. Criminalizing young individuals at so many levels perpetuates #so345

#so345 growing up in the chicagoland area, all i heard about was how dangerous the city was and how the police would always keep us safe. when i visited the city with some of my friends, we didn't see a lot of violence, but we did see a lot of police, especially (1/2)
Do you think being "copwise" and engaging in various coping techniques reflects a panoptic society, where we don't only internalize that we can be watched at any time but also that particular people, such as cops, can be watching? As such, we then adjust accordingly. #so345
The way he described the performative aspects of queerness both in & out of the closet especially in the Midwest reminded me of the musical "The Prom", which closely explores the idea that being gay in the Midwest is somehow an anomaly due to the culture surrounding it (2) #so345
@LauraVso345 Thank you so much for sharing your experience! I’m sorry you felt guilty for your condition. Your experience really illustrates the point made by the authors that exercising “self-control” is actually subjection to social control #so345
appearing like they are using services and accommodations they "don't need" because of preconceived notions about what disabilities look like. It's a unique problem to navigate. (2/2) #so345
The discussion about achieved vs. ascribed deviance made me wonder about how people with "hidden" disabilities experience this. While their appearance may not be treated as "deviance", their utilization of necessary services may make them appear deviant to others by (1/2) #so345
@SydneyGso345 @JunebugSO345 ^^ that is to say, monitored when we are FULLY aware of the sheer volume of cameras everywhere nowadays... it is scary in the not knowing i think #so345
@SydneyGso345 @JunebugSO345 ultimately, with the internet & surveillance, at this point, there is no way to opt-out. (not to get all "the end is nigh") however, that degree of active participation feels like a conscious choice to participate in it rather than being passively monitored #so345 (2/2)
@SydneyGso345 @JunebugSO345 i definitely agree with this analysis, & it was something i was conscious of while reading the article. i cover my camera on my computer fearing being watched, yet that does not change the fact that much of my life is on social media. #so345 (1/2)
@JunebugSO345 watched, we are more likely to conform, even if we are not actually being watched. I think this is the heart of the idea of the panopticon and what makes it differ from current digital surveillance that we are less aware of. (3/3) #so345
@JunebugSO345 , if we are not as aware that we are being surveilled, we will likely feel less inclined to conform. I think this is why so many stores have some sort of sign, or even on an individual's property, such as "smile you're on camera." When we feel that we are being (2/3) #so345
@JunebugSO345 Lauren, I agree with your point that the function of both methods of surveillance is social control. However, I think it is different because when we are aware of being surveilled, no one has to ensure that we are conforming, we do it for them. On the other hand(1/3) #so345
@LauraVso345 I think the point is less that the consequences of mental illness are a myth and more that different behavior patterns and ways of thinking have been labeled as mental "illness" because they hinder full "functioning" according to social standards and norms. (1/?) #so345
I think this is interesting when considering who has the power to label deviance because Catholic priests are not being similarly targeted by legislation despite evidence of extensive child sexual abuse. It clearly has to do with majority/minority statuses (2/2) #so345
