@Carissa15665580 @JunebugSO345 in identifying further context of experience, i think people outside of marginalized communities can learn from their own biases and engage with topics that cause them discomfort e.g., confronting socioeconomic conditions that separate these communities #so345
@Carissa15665580 given this, the school to prison pipeline is certainly echoed, but simply existing in these communities is almost an internship in criminal activity #so345
@Carissa15665580 i think it is interesting regarding the way certain communities are funneled into the prison syst that in this way there is sort of a replication of survival instincts that worked on the “outside” it truly does feel like people are given a master class in crime #so345
(3) so, i wonder, to what extent do these boys upbringings impact their adolescent interactions? given these consistent interactions w/ police regardless of criminality, what do you think makes some conform to the stereotype while others do not? #so345
something that i found particularly interesting is how difficult it is for the non-delinquent boys to remain that way. i think it speaks volumes abt the system & proves how there are a # of contributing factors to ea observed boy in the study, yet there is a through-line #so345
(2) ...in police presence. as rios puts it, despite being consistently stripped of their dignity, they dissented. while the takeaway from this can be "the model minority" i think that misses the point of everything rios has said so far. #so345
how do you think decriminalization of drugs might impact police relations with communities like the one observed in the book? given the random (illegal) stops being "successful" under the pretence of protection/weapons search, do you think relations would improve? #so345
@LVso345 on a related note, 3 Xs policy is a fallible syst due to the radically high recidivism rate (5 of 6 return to prison in 9 years). the carceral syst as rios observes views people in these impacted groups as potential offenders, not as potential victims of social factors #so345
@JunebugSO345 i think a great deal of the crim syst is especially impacted by hyperindividualization regarding crimes that X fit social disorg theory. the desire toward the american dream resulting in white collar crime can apply, viewing that the ends justifying the means #so345
@Bresocial22@LVso345 in circumstances of poverty the luxury of long-term thought is not often awarded as many people live paycheck-paycheck (or even less than that). especially given their exposure to adults in their life assuming their long-term position in life will involve criminality #so345
@JunebugSO345 i have known people to hold implicit biases, but after working in diverse-work spaces have as a result become more progressive. this is evident by the "contact hypothesis" which looks at similarity & mutual beneficial circumstances as a way to reduce "intergroup anxiety" #so345
@JunebugSO345 as observed in my social psych class, it unfortunately depends on the conditions represented. oftentimes in a sitch like this, people have a tendency to state that the person/group observed is an exception, not the rule. so, maybe? but it really depends on the conditions #so345
@DSChutch what i mean to say is, the issue remains that the probation officer's perspective unintentionally lacks the sociological imagination, & bc of this, even if they mean well, the relationship btwn them & those they try to help is misinformed on wht they actually need #so345
@DSChutch as strange of an analogy as it seems in spiderman NWH, many people q'd the rehab of the villains who were going to be sent right back to the point of their death. a change in personality of one is not what is needed for the system to change & the community to become safer #so345
@LVso345 it certainly should not be, yet it reflects the way our prison system as a whole treats offenders. no one should be put into a position where it is easier to keep reoffending than to attempt to become a pt of society again, but that’s what probation promotes #so345
