A desert night painted with science.
This striking artwork was created using a natural blue pigment made by the microalga Galdieria, grown on recycled food-factory waste such as chocolate by-products. The vivid, heat-stable color shows how biotechnology can turn waste into something both beautiful and valuable.
The painting, depicting desert dunes under a night sky, was created by PhD student Mauricio Lopez Portillo Masson (@Mauricio_M) from Prof. @Kylelauersen's Sustainable & Synthetic Biotechnology Lab at KAUST.
This work was led by Mauricio, supported by Assistant Professor @MikeD_Fox, with additional contributions from the @KAUSTCoreLabs and Prof. Peter Lammers at the Arizona Center for Algae Technology and Innovation (@ASU_AzCATI).
