One of my favorites talks at #SSSP2019 was E.J. Masicampo’s “Immoral Acts and Bonding with Others”, in which he presented evidence that people feel closer to a fellow perpetrator following an immoral act. Conclusion: Social bonding can facilitate immoral behavior and vice versa.
Enjoyed seeing old friends and new research at #SSSP2019 yesterday. Lot of great talks and posters. Mark Leary’s closing keynote “Tales from the Trash Can” about how often the studies we conduct don’t make it to publication was great. He ought to turn that into a book.
SO IMPRESSED with these amazing scholars and the incredible work they’re doing!! Go follow @D_BartPlange and @KyshiaHenderson, they make me proud to call myself a social psychologist #SSSP2019

“There are two ways of doing research in the field” - the folks that do the same thing for forty years, and the folks where every study is a new topic. Perhaps we should aim for a happy medium, Mark Leary suggests. #SSSP2019
Some studies LITERALLY end up in the trash. Mark Leary tells us of a beautiful Facebook study. The student author’s mom cleaned her apartment...and helpfully threw “all those boxes” (ie, the data & signed consents) in the dumpster. Leary turned himself into the IRB. #SSSP2019

Putting ppl in a dark room increases desire for others’ acceptance - rejected 5x, never published. Also, the snake wasn’t real, don’t worry.
(Just a museum quality replication with its own water bowl).

Mark Leary is telling us about bonkers studies he loves that didn’t work, and is now laughing too hard to continue....ptpts were randomly assigned to be stared at by a person, by AN OWL, or by themselves (in a mirror). Control conditions? Watching a sunset. #SSSP2019

“I hope you never have an insane research assistant. I did once.” - Mark Leary, on why some studies don’t get published (editorial note: wow, this is a doozy of a story)
#SSSP2019

How many studies have YOU run in your career? Mark Leary got a surprise going through his files as he prepared to retire - in files containing 250+ studies, most were never published (and many he didn’t remember!) #SSSP2019

Feeling a bit of FOMO at all these #SSSP2019 tweets? Megan Probst tells us it’s prob bc you wish you could be here, want to belong, and feel a little bad comparing yourself to folks who *are* here

Are confederate monuments really about southern pride? No, finds @KyshiaHenderson - racism predicts support for confederate symbols, above and beyond southern pride #SSSP2019

Jimmy Wyngaarden representing @ExperPsychatApp at #sssp2019 presenting his work on the salience of moral values in moral judgements. @TwilaWingrove @MonroeAndrew

Confederate monuments weren’t erected after the civil war, @KyshiaHenderson points out. Instead, they were built decades or even a century later, in reaction to gains in Black civil rights #SSSP2019

Overall, people were less interested in social relationships with dark-skinned Black people, finds @D_BartPlange. Men were especially uninterested in dating Black women with dark skin.
