A fabulous 1991 season was at an end. It had seen fantastic racing by the sensational looking and sounding 3.5 litre atmo cars. Three OEMs going toe-to-toe, a surprise and welcome Le Mans victor, and a worthy title winner. But, uncertainty over ‘92 tainted it somewhat. #SWC91

In the press conference, Schumacher was all smiles with the world at his feet and F1 mega stardom beckoning. The Jaguar drivers shook hands on a titanic title scrap, Warwick ruing both the Silverstone and Mexico results that scuppered his title bid. #SWC91

On the podium, Schumacher and Wendlinger were ecstatic and rightly so. They had suffered so much unreliability during the season but never lost heart. And for the team, it was the perfect result at such an uncertain time for all. #SWC91

The Euser/Zwolsman EuroRacing Spice was seventh and sealed fifth in the championship for Cor, while the Trust Porsche finished eighth and the Terada/Sala and Kennedy/Yorino Mazdas finished ninth and tenth. #SWC91

Baldi brought the sole Peugeot home in fourth while Schlesser was fifth, a double finish for Mercedes. Wallace brought the Toyota home in a well deserved sixth on the TS010’s debut, the car’s engine running reliably and strongly. #SWC91

Warwick finished second, a fine solo drive which had been threatened by a pinched nerve that cost him feeling in his right leg. Derek was bitterly disappointed to lose the title, as Brabham came home third to seal the world championship for Fabi. Jaguar got their double. #SWC91

Against all odds, the Mercedes V12 had kept its fluids intact and Schumacher crossed the line to take victory for himself and Wendlinger. The team were emotional and joyous in victory, and it was fitting that all of the big three had now won in a brilliant ‘91 season. #SWC91

Schumacher made his way on to the final lap of the race, his pit board telling him he had a lead of over 30 seconds now to Warwick. Oil on the circuit, darkness descending and the fog rolling back in had slowed the Jag. Only a few corners remained of the ‘91 season. #SWC91

Still both Mercs circulated, one leading, the other in fifth. The team waited nervously in the pits, knowing how cruel the season had been to them so far. Peter Sauber hung over the pit wall, urging Schumacher to cool it. Would the C291 make the finish? #SWC91

Alliot in fourth pitted for Baldi to take over and, after a couple of laps in front, Warwick made his final stop. When he rejoined, he was 12 seconds down on Schumacher and both then started firing in hard, fast laps. But the gap remained the same. #SWC91

Fabi pitted on the same lap as the Merc, and Brabham took over No.4. Knowing that holding station would secure him the title, Teo had really backed off in that stint, the gap to Warwick rising to over 30 seconds. All David had to do was bring the car home for the Italian. #SWC91

Schumacher chatted with his engineers before waiting to take the car over from Wendlinger on lap 61. Michael resumed while Karl looked calm and composed, knowing he’d done a good job of not wilting under the pressure of Warwick’s middle stint charge. #SWC91

Also already gone by this time was the Brun 962 with Pareja at the wheel. Another Porsche engine failure. And they weren’t the only ones either. The Ratzenberger/Elgh Schuppan car also lost its engine. Both out. #SWC91

By this point in the race, another car had been lost, this time the No.11 Kremer Porsche 962 with Reuter at the wheel. Engine failure saw it come slowly into the pits, the car’s end of season performances well short of their early season form. Out. #SWC91

In the middle stint of the race, Warwick was the star, driving his heart out and closing the gap to the leading Merc to 5 secs on lap 55. However, his charge was stymied by traffic, losing 4 secs behind Wallace alone. At his second stop he was 11 secs back from Wendlinger. #SWC91

Also a lap down but well behind Mass was the Toyota in sixth place. Wallace was now at the wheel after a later out-of-synch pit stop due to Lees’ spin and repair earlier in the race. Despite this, the car was still running strongly. #SWC91

After the first round of stops, Wendlinger had a reduced lead of 15 seconds over Warwick, who was in turn six seconds clear of Fabi, their title battle still well and truly on. The delays to No.5 and No.1 meant that Alliot and Mass were now a lap down. #SWC91

Peugeot had tried to replenish the oil on No.5 at its pit stop after the failure for No.6 but weren’t able to do so. Alliot was called back in for an extra stop six laps later to complete the job. The car was now out of contention for the win and the title for its drivers. #SWC91
