Road grading will continue working south toward Willow Creek.
Firefighters are making progress chipping light fuels along containment lines and hauling heavy fuel out in dump trailers.
A flight is scheduled for personnel to remove the protective wrapping from the cabin on Mogollon Baldy.
Due to the reduced threat and the decreased fire suppression activity in the Willow Creek subdivision, the Gila Las Cruces Type 3 Incident Management Team recommended the subdivision be moved back into Ready status. The Catron County Sheriff changed the evacuation status on Monday and NM Department of Transportation opened the Bursum Road/NM-159between Mogollon and Willow Creek.
Unless significant change occurs, the next and final news release from the Gila Las Cruces Type 3 Incident Management Team will be distributed Wednesday. Information will continue to be available on the Gila National Forest Facebook page.

With a diminished risk of fire approaching the Willow Creek subdivision, crews began disassembling structure protection equipment. They will complete that work today and begin returning supplies back to the regional fire cache.
Turkeyfeather Mountain, the area seeing the most fire growth recently, received a half inch of rain Saturday. The storm brought wetting rain to the entire east side of the fire. The west side received around one tenth of an inch.
Initial attack resources remain available to respond to any nearby fire starts.
Weather: Today, monsoon moisture is expected to flow into the region. This marks the start of cooler temperatures, higher humidity, cloudier skies, and daily storm development over the Gila National Forest.

Fire crews made steady progress on Friday, supported by light precipitation over the entire fire area and helicopter bucket drops.
At Willow Creek, the structure protection group finished removing accumulated slash and logs to maintain road access and reduce flood risk. Areas of remaining heat were observed near Black Mountain and north of Turkeyfeather Mountain.
Today, crews are reducing vegetation along Bearwallow Road by hauling slash created during earlier preparation work.

On Thursday, a Type 1 helicopter conducted bucket drops on the northern portion of the fire.
Light precipitation occurred over the incident, though not as much as in previous days. Preparation work continued along Bearwallow Road, and snagging operations were completed up to the Bearwallow Lookout.
Several heat pockets were observed near Black Mountain and the Turkey Feather Fire footprint.
Today, crews continue preparation work along Bearwallow Road, removing vegetation to support future fire holding operations if necessary.
A dozer will continue to improve the 119 Road, removing hazards to enhance access. The structure protection group will remove accumulated slash and
logs in the Willow Creek area to reduce flooding risk.
The initial attack firefighters remain available to respond to new fire starts and support local districts as needed.
Weather: Conditions will be drier today as precipitation chances decrease. On Friday and Saturday, rain becomes much less likely as northwest winds shift deeper moisture south, bringing drier air into the fire area.

Today, a Type 1 Helicopter dropped water on fires edge, southwest of Willow Creek Subdivision, in order to help slow fire progression.
In the afternoon, the fire received much‑needed rain, which helped decrease fire activity.
Lightning moving through the area added hazards for crews working in the field.
Even with these challenges, suppression operations are still ongoing when it is safe for firefighters to do so. Firefighter and public safety remain the top priority.

Summary: Yesterday containment increased on the northern flank where the fire reached the recent Hummingbird Fire footprint. The fire experienced light rain, though it was largely non-wetting, and fire behavior remained active. Structure protection personnel adjusted the sprinkler systems in Willow Creek to increase total coverage, while firefighters continued hazard tree removal along Bearwallow Road. Firefighters from the Sacaton Fire assisted the Gila National Forest with a new lightning-caused fire called the Gilita. The Gilita has been contained and called out due to a fast response from the national forest and Sacaton firefighters.
Today, firefighters will be assessing fire growth should defensive firing operations become necessary to protect Willow Creek Subdivision. Crews will keep working on Bearwallow Road as a contingency fireline. An initial attack group remains ready to respond to any new lighting-caused starts.

Since it was reported at 2 acres on June 21, the #SacatonFire in the Gila has averaged 629 acres of growth per day.

However, activity has surged expanding by nearly 1,396 acres (a 20.6% increase) in the last 24 hours 07/4/2026.
At yesterday's uncontained momentum, it could reach 15,157 acres in 5 days.
This is a massive challenge for the 148 personnel, single dozer and 2 helicopters assigned to the incident.
Each person is right now theoretically responsible for over 55 acres of fire, leaving out overhead.

Summary: Yesterday, 114 additional resources arrived on the Sacaton Fire.
The fire continued to grow in the headwaters of Willow Creek, flanking through heavy fuel loading and standing dead trees from the 2012 Whitewater Baldy Fire. Fire spread to the north is slowing as it enters the recent Hummingbird and Turkey Feather fire footprints.
Unfortunately, Apache Cabin, a historic Forest Service cabin located in the Gila Wilderness, was lost in the fire. The cabin’s location mid-slope and intense fire behavior did not allow for safe engagement for firefighters. The preservation of life and firefighter safety remain the highest priority.
Today, firefighters will focus on implementing structure protection measures—including the deployment of water pumps and hose lays—around the Willow Creek Subdivision. Crews will also evaluate whether conditions warrant the use of defensive firing operations west of Willow Creek to protect private property.
Weather: Today, highs will be around 80 degrees F. Winds will blow 10 – 15 m.p.h. and gust to 25 m.p.h.
