While conducting #OperationKarabo to combat #IllegalMining activities, police arrested one suspect who was found in possession of an AK-47 rifle with one fully loaded magazine in Mohlakeng, West Rand District, on Thursday, 06 August 2026.
In a separate incident, members of the #SAPS Public Order Police (POP) were conducting routine patrols while transporting a colleague home after flexi duties in Nellmapius Extension 2. They noticed a white Toyota Hilux bakkie parked at a residence. An adult male fled from the yard upon seeing the marked police vehicle.
Upon inspection, members discovered that the vehicle was being stripped. Further investigation led to the recovery of two signal jammers and one portable power station inside the vehicle. It was later established that the Toyota Hilux had been hijacked in Koporo Street, Nellmapius Extension 6, Silverton policing area.
The following items were seized: Two signal jammers and one portable power station.
No arrest has been made in connection with this incident.

She began her 41-year tenure in the organization as a 19-year-old Clerk at Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC) at Springs police station in 1985. She is currently based at Provincial Head Office Auxiliary Services.
Auxiliary Services component provides essential administrative support with core functions that include security management, archive and registry, miscellaneous services with access to information, switchboard and cleaning services. This component is vital within SAPS as the backbone to support frontline policing. Without this critical pillar, other components would face severe operational breakdowns.
Colonel Blignaut’s dream while in school was to become an airhostess initially but as the saying goes (bible scripture), “Man proposes but God disposes and decides the outcome”. She recounts being sworn in as a student at the end of 1986 and going for training to be a police officer the following year at Pretoria West College. After college, she furthered her education and qualified with a National Diploma in Police Administration from Technikon South Africa. She advanced through the ranks in different sections steadily after facing certain challenges as a young police officer that were unique to women at the time. It was an era where women had to endure earning less salaries than their male counterparts for doing the same job. Women had put a (v) after their signatures to indicate that it is a female.
To the women in blue: “Stand out in the crowd, do not be afraid to ask for help while you celebrate strength, leadership and equality. I love a quote by Michelle Obama saying: There is no limit to what we as women can accomplish.”

A 28-year-old man was arrested on 05 August 2026 in Dobsonville, Soweto, after he allegedly staged his own #kidnapping in an attempt to extort money from his family.
On 04 August 2026, a kidnapping case was reported at SAPS Johannesburg Central after it was alleged that the victim had been abducted by unknown suspects who demanded a ransom of R100 000-00 for his release.
A multidisciplinary team comprising the Provincial Tracking Team, Crime Intelligence, Detectives from Johannesburg Central, the K9 Unit, Soweto Flying Squad, Fidelity Specialist Services, and Vision Tactical was immediately mobilised to locate and rescue the alleged victim.
Intensive investigations and follow-up operations led the team to a house in Dobsonville, where they found the alleged victim together with three other individuals. Further investigations established that the said victim had allegedly conspired with the three suspects to stage the kidnapping in an attempt to extort money from his family.
All four suspects aged between 28 and 37 were arrested and are expected to appear before court on 07 August 2026 on charges of kidnapping and defeating the ends of justice.
The police warn members of the public against opening false criminal cases, as this constitutes a criminal offence and wastes valuable resources that could otherwise be used to assist genuine victims of crime. ML

It is reported that three unknown suspects entered the warehouse posing as customers. Once inside, they produced a firearm and threatened the complainant before demanding the panic button and the keys to the safe. The suspects then robbed employees of their cellphones, stole 21 bags of coffee, and fled the scene in an NP200 bakkie belonging to a customer.
Approximately 500 metres from the scene, the suspects were intercepted by security personnel, with support from various law enforcement agencies. During the ensuing pursuit, two suspects were wounded and subsequently arrested. They were transported to Helen Joseph Hospital under a police guard for medical treatment.
The stolen vehicle was later found abandoned in Zandspruit. Police recovered one 9mm firearm loaded with two live rounds of ammunition, as well as the 21 stolen bags of coffee.
A total of 12 suspects were arrested. Of these, five are South African nationals, two are Zimbabwean nationals, two are Mozambican nationals and three are Malawian nationals.
The estimated value of the recovered stolen property is approximately R2 070 000.00.
The Provincial Commissioner of Police in Gauteng, Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni, commended the bravery, vigilance and swift response of the security personnel and all law enforcement agencies involved. He emphasised that effective collaboration between private security and law enforcement continues to play a vital role in the fight against crime.

It is reported that, two security officers were patrolling undergound at Kloof no.1 shaft level 25 when they spotted two individuals with a lamp on a non-working area. When they went closer, the individuals ran away but the security managed to catch one of them.
The suspect failed to produce a clock card and was established to be an illegal miner.
Upon searching his bag, the security officers recovered eight explosive detonators and they arrested him.

#SAPS Eldorado Park has arrested a 27-year-old man for possession of unlicensed ammunition following an intelligence-driven operation conducted in the Eldorado Park policing precinct on Tuesday, 4 August 2026.
Police acted on intelligence about a man allegedly in possession of unlicensed ammunition. The information was operationalised, leading members to the suspect’s location where a search was conducted.
During the search, police recovered a total of 72 live rounds of ammunition, comprising 40 x 9mm live rounds, 09 x R5 live rounds, and 23 x 22 calibre live rounds.
The suspect was immediately arrested for possession of unlicensed ammunition.
The 27-year-old suspect is expected to appear before Lenasia Magistrate's Court soon on a charge of possession of unlicensed ammunition.

At approximately 04:20, members attached to Pretoria Moot Social #CrimePrevention were conducting routine patrols along 9th Avenue, Wonderboom South, when they noticed two vehicles—a white VW Polo sedan and a white SUV—parked facing opposite directions under suspicious circumstances.
As police approached to investigate, the driver of the white VW Polo sped away in a southerly direction. Members immediately initiated a pursuit.
During the chase, the suspect drove recklessly, including travelling against oncoming traffic along Steve Biko Road, placing the lives of other road users at serious risk. The pursuit ended when the suspect turned into Annie Botha Street, where he lost control of the vehicle and collided with a stormwater drain, causing damage to the vehicle.
He then abandoned the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot. Police members pursued the suspect and successfully apprehended him a short distance away.
With the assistance of Cartrack personnel, police traced the registered owner of the vehicle and confirmed that the VW Polo had been reported stolen.
The suspect was arrested for possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle and is expected to appear before the Pretoria Central Magistrate's Court on Thursday, 06 August 2026.

The main objective of this talk was to promote school safety among learners in the Foundation, Intermediate and Senior Phase. To educate learners on the harmful effects of bullying and encourage respect for one another.
To further educate learners on the dangers of smoking vaped (vaping) and the health risks associated with nicotine addiction. To educate learners about the dangers of social media, including cyberbullying, online predators, scams, and the sharing of personal information, and to emphasise the importance of parental guidance when accessing online platforms.
A total of 1 713 learners were reached during this awareness campaign.

#sapsGP [OPERATION KARABO YIELDS POSITIVE RESULTS IN ROODEPOORT AND LANGLAAGTE, JOHANNESBURG DISTRICT]
On Monday, 03 August 2026, a static deployment operation was conducted at the Main Reef mining sites in Roodepoort and Langlaagte, Johannesburg District. The operation involved members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), Public Order Policing (POP), the K9 Unit, and Visible Policing (Vispol).
During the operation in Roodepoort, members recovered and seized 34 rounds of AK-47 ammunition.
A similar operation was conducted in the Langlaagte area the same day, where #IllegalMining equipment that include 19 pendukas, 4 stamping pots, 1 stamping stick, and 40 iron balls, were confiscated. Alcohol was also seized. No suspects were arrested during the operations.
In another separate incident, the police in Carletonville arrested two suspects on 04 August 2026 after they were found in possession on 10 tube explosives 16 detonators and a 10m detonator cord.
