Like many I was saddened to see the foundry close in 2017. It was a unique part of our industrial heritage: 450 years of production from the Liberty Bell to Big Ben. I have commissioned a review of how the Planning Inspectorate and planning policy considers and defends heritage.

Barker-Mills makes the point - correctly - that Rayliff's early proposals did not involve foundry use, as their representatives made clear in their evidence. They only put in a little foundry to help them get planning permission. Most of the historic foundry will be a café.

What is the 'optimum viable use' for the bell foundry ? This is the key issue for the Inquiry. Surely it's a no brainer. It's better for it to remain as a foundry, if at all possible, than being converted into a hotel ?
