The #ScienceBoosterClubs leaders talk publicly about evolution and climate change in areas that are often deeply conservative. You might think they run into a lot of controversy, but what’s really interesting is how rarely they run into trouble.
But other leaders are from all over the country, and from all sorts of backgrounds. Industrial technicians, stay at home moms, people with full-time jobs way outside of science or education, and even SciCommer @LandrumAR work together to make the #ScienceBoosterClubs program run.
Some of the most experienced SBC leaders are my friends from #UIowa, like @mneiman, @KE_McElroy, @ScienceJorge, and @JosephJalinksy. @mneiman and her grad students helped the #ScienceBoosterClubs project get off the ground at the very beginning!
How does this community-based program help improve literacy and start conversations about socially controversial topics? Our no-conflict approach. The #ScienceBoosterClubs present high quality content, but the way they present it is the most important part.
And the #ScienceBoosterClubs program seems to work! We’ve got some good evidence. My paper looking at science literacy in #ScienceBoosterClubs communities was just accepted into #JCOM- should be coming out soon. Sorry no link yet- just accepted 5/31.
The #ScienceBoosterClubs help start conversations on topics like evolution and climate change in areas where there is not a lot of access to informal education. The clubs serve agricultural and manufacturing communities in places like the high plains of Texas.
When I was with #NCSE I worked on building community support for science education through the Science Booster Club Program #ScienceBoosterClubs. I started this program in Iowa in 2015. This year, it’s active in a dozen states; mostly in conservative areas.
