Sampson dedicated his life to assisting me, his Mom, to regain life and maneuver day-to-day living happy, healthy, and independent! He worked tirelessly with his it is the Best! Day! Ever attitude to guide me through an education, help recover from a brain injury, and find the strength to build and maintain a company to help others! With his help our endeavors have helped countless individuals needing a role model, needing assistance and guidance, or needing someone to be there who understood and could be their voice. Our endeavors will change the landscape of science culture - one paw print at a time! Sampson is SO MUCH MORE than the bio - he is a Hero Dog to countless people across the globe! He is beyond question my Hero Dog for sure!
We spent nearly 9-years working in labs and advocating for all people with disabilities with a focus on service dog handler access to science education and careers.
We traveled over 126,570 total flight miles to give presentations, lectures, and help educational institutions, governmental bodies and science organizations in the development of Laboratory Service Dog Policies and guidelines. Also, act as an advocate for individuals faced with barriers and discrimination.
We've given hundreds of webinars, and represented 100's of individuals with disabilities in the last 5-years to assist them in getting the accommodations they need. We've testified in court cases for individuals who were discriminated against.
We've developed and are working on the development of training webinars and courses with the @citiprogram on service dog's 101, service dogs in science, service dogs and first responders, and several more.
With all of your help, we've taken on systemic bias, changed policies in the top four science organizations in the country so they include laboratory service dog policy, we've changed policies in hotels and restaurants who discriminated against service dog handlers, changed training polices for several airlines and TSA, and taken on the @CDCgov most recently with the assistance of @RepCiscomani and several other US Representatives, science organizations, and service dog training organizations to amend ONE SENTENCE in the CDC biosafety guidelines being used to unjustly exclude service dog handlers from labs. Our next step on this is is a formal congressional hearing and possible legislation. AND we've written a book about the journey through all of the above due out next Spring!
Sampson helped me start a revolution to make positive changes across the globe (in eight countries) for service dog handlers seeking equal access to science - ultimately within our communities and the travel industry, by default. In doing so, when we saw an injustice, he gave me the strength and support to fight back and make changes. We see a shift in thinking and now have service dog handlers across the globe working in laboratories, getting a science education, working in the health industry, research industry, and living full lives. Sampson is a HERO DOG to so many and his legacy will live on as we continue to make the world a more inclusive place for all!
He is a positive role model, an inspiration to others, and the Ambassador for Service Dogs in Science!
I am forever grateful that I was gifted this beautiful creature to help guide me through life, help me recover and be a better person, and give the ability to help others in need! Thank you me dearest Sampson!

Mom says that one of the most miraculous feats demonstrated by a service dog is the ability to sense a particular medical crisis both before it occurs and before the dog’s handler is aware that such a crisis is imminent. When sensing an impending medical crisis, the dog will communicate this to his or her handler. This is critical to the handler's safety and well-being. We service dogs, that have this ability, are referred to as Medical Alert Dogs.
Three typical alerts are:
Paw – This is by far the most common alert behavior. It is easy to teach and the dogs can do it from any age. Another benefit of pawing as an alert is it is discreet and can be done when the dog is still laying down, minimizing the disruption to those around you. The paw during medical alert is very different than the typical paw presented by a pet dog seeking attention.
Nudge – The dog nudges your hand or pokes your leg.
Bringsel – A bringsel is a stuffed cylinder or a tab that the dog holds in their mouth. It can be velcroed onto someone’s beltloop or it can hang on the dog’s collar, depending on the need. The benefit to a bringsel is it is extremely distinct – the dog only holds it when it is alerting.
I know all three and use them in different situations. I never alert Mom in the lab with a nudge, as it might cause a chemical spill. So I would use a bringsel. But during every day, I would use a paw or a nudge. Sometimes I would simply place my head in her lap and look up. MY expression told Mom that she needed to take action - that might mean taking a break, sitting down be fore she passed out, leaving a setting, or taking medicine.
These alerts kept her safe, she could take care of her medical needs before they became critical, and she could continue being effective in her job, and living a happy, healthy, and independent life!

Because of Mom’s brain injury she has trouble with stairs; her left leg is not as responsive as her other. I helped her up miles of stairs over the 9 years we worked side-by-side keeping her independent! We had to trust each other, and work as a team. I had to stay focused on Mom, check in frequently, and adjust my speed. Mom says because of me she can live a successfully independent life and be effective at her job!

Mom and I traveled over 50,000 air miles last year advocating for service dogs in science! More are planned for the coming year! No person with a disability who relies on a service dog for medical assistance should be denied equal access to science! We will do everything in our power to ensure that!

I attended every single day of class while Mom was in college, ~ 1,800 days total. Some semesters Mom took 5 classes, plus spent 4 - 8 hours a day working in a Neuroscience lab, and I was beside her for every minute of those days. Then she spent countless hours studying and taking exams - I was there as well. I made her education possible!
Best! Job! Ever!

Sampson says, because of my assistance Mom can be independent, she can stay happy and healthy, and she can do many activities like work, shop, go out to eat, travel, and attend social events - even go to Disney World- many things non-disabled people take for granted. Service dogs are life changers, and life-savers. It is the Best! Job! Ever!

Mom here: When Sam and I started in neuroscience, service dogs were not allowed in labs. He was my lifeline and independence, so we challenged that thinking and changed policies - Sampson has changed lives globally. Because of Sampson, I was able to complete my degree and open a business to assist others who encountered resistance.
“My service dog and I are pursuing a career in biology and will take Chemistry courses in college. Thank you for your examples!”
“We are entering an anatomy lab next semester; what advice do you have?”
“My mommy (from service dog : ) ) is a scientist too!
“I am prepping to apply to graduate programs and know I will be met with a lot of “well, we don’t know if we can do that” or “it’s just not done in this field.”
"I was just hired at the (......research facility....) and have been waiting for 4-months to start my job because they can't figure out how to accommodate my service dog. I keep getting passed from one department to another. What can I do?" We contacted their HR, and they are now working full-time.
“Hi, I am sorry to bother you, but I dropped out of college last semester because my biology class just would not allow […….] my service dog to be in class. I tried everything, but no one would listen. I gave up trying. I saw your story and now want to go back and try again. Any advice? Where do I start with the college? [……..] is my independence. Any help would be appreciated.” We helped them locate another school, guided them and the university through the process, and they are in their second year.
“I was forcefully told to leave my chemistry lab class, in front of all the other students, when I arrived with […..] my service dog. I was shocked and embarrassed. […….] was formally trained for 2 years through an organization, and I prepared her with goggles and boots. They won’t even talk about accommodations; they say it isn't allowed. What can I do?” We contacted their EHS, and they are now back in classes with all accommodations needed.
“I am currently a pre-nursing major at [……], and I hope to be able to apply for nursing school in Spring. I am currently in a microbiology lab. The department head of biology, I think, said that my dog would need to wear a lab coat, goggles, and “gloves.” Would you happen to know where I could get those things?” YES! We did!
“I am in Marine Biology, and my service dog goes with me everywhere! It hasn’t been easy. Thank you for what you are doing!”
“I want to go to medical school but have been afraid I can’t with my service dog but then I saw you. I will be following to see how this turns out. Thank you!”
“One of my lab partners has a service dog and is told she can’t take some lab classes next semester. What can she do?” We contacted the university and met with their ADA coordinator, lab safety and compliance, EHS, and HR. Her and her dog are actively taking science and lab courses.
“Hi, I am a professor of Chemistry, and due to your pioneering work, more students with service dogs have attended my science classes! One in kinesiology - needed to be in the gym where they never let dogs go. One was in Anatomy and Physiology, in a cadaver lab with all the protective equipment. So what a tribute to you! You're having a ripple effect!”
“Hi I am a Chemistry Professor at [.... State] and we are receiving more requests from students with service dogs to enter laboratory classes. We are working to update our service dog policy to accommodate service dogs in teaching labs. Do you have any information you could send that would be helpful?”
“Hi, I‘m a biology professor at a [....University]. Please let me know if there is any way I can help.”
"I am a blind woman in the sciences. As a blind woman, I never thought I could do science, especially with my guide dog. Then I found you and Sampson. I now have my undergraduate degree in neuroscience and am currently finishing my MS in biological sciences with a neuroscience focus. Thank you for all you both have done for all of us!"
