In a move to make Slum-Free India, the Central Government is planning to undertake a nationwide survey of urban slums after a gap of over 15 years to strengthen the policy and planning framework for inclusive urban development.
The proposed exercise, expected to commence around July 2027, will systematically assess the physical condition of slum settlements across cities and update estimates of the population residing in them.
This will be the first comprehensive national-level assessment since 2012, when the National Sample Survey Office conducted a similar exercise under its 69th round.
Earlier also, the then UPA government launched the Rajiv Awas Yojana (RAY) in 2011, with the objective of achieving a slum-free India within a five-year timeframe.
