Just as magistrates are being granted powers to double their maximum sentencing to a year and of course should the sitting @10DowningStreet Prime Minister be charged and summoned for 1st appearance in court (#Covid regs) or any MP it is vital for #openjustice not #secretcourts
In a nutshell, the Bill will abolish tens of thousands of first appearances in the magistrates courts.
The prosecution setting out the charges, consideration of bail, indications of guilty/not guilty pleas, selection of court for trial - all will now happen behind closed doors.
