Vacancies Continue to Plague All India Services; IAS Shortfall Tops 1,300 Vacancies across the All India Services remain a persistent concern, with more than 1,300 posts in the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) lying vacant, alongside 505 posts in the IPS and 1,029 in the IFS, as of 1 January 2025, according to a written reply placed before the Rajya Sabha. Figures shared by *Dr. Jitendra Singh* reveal that against an authorised national strength of 6,877 IAS, 5,099 IPS, and 3,193 IFS officers, the services are operating with just 5,577 IAS, 4,594 IPS, and 2,164 IFS officers in position—underscoring a significant manpower deficit at both the Centre and in the states. Several major states continue to grapple with acute shortages. Uttar Pradesh, the country’s largest IAS cadre, has 571 officers against a sanctioned strength of 652. Similar gaps persist in Bihar, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra, affecting administrative capacity and service delivery. In the Northeast, smaller cadres such as Manipur, Nagaland, and Sikkim report proportionately higher vacancy levels, particularly in the Indian Foreign Service. The government has also placed on record data on social category representation among direct recruits inducted through the Civil Services Examinations between 2020 and 2024. During this period, 245 OBC, 135 SC, and 67 ST officers were appointed to the IAS; 255 OBC, 141 SC, and 71 ST to the IPS; and 231 OBC, 95 SC, and 48 ST to the IFS.
