#UPDATE #SemiFire from my earlier tweet. Quick action by Mountain Green and Morgan County Fire & EMS firefighters averted a much more serious fire situation on Interstate 84 at 11:55 this morning. Friction from a flat caused a tire fire to erupt on a 7600 gallon butane tanker. Utah Highway Patrol troopers had arrived and shut down traffic in both directions. Chief 131 arrived and determined the relief valve on the tanker had not yet operated, so the tank was not yet overpressurized. 4 tires were burning intensely. Quick application of a large dry chemical fire by the fire crews held the fire in check while hose lines were deployed. The driver had also attempted to knock back the flames with his extinguisher just as we arrived. A hose line extinguished the stubborn fire, and a Thermal Imaging Camera was employed to ensure the water had cooled the fire and the tank sufficiently. A gas detector meter was employed to ensure no gas had escaped.
South Weber Fire Department Engine 1 was requested to back up our firefighters, and Weber Fire District HazMat61 responded to assess the tank integrity and provide expertise. Weber Area Dispatch 911 & Emergency Services District provided excellent situational awareness and communication, patching together responding fire units radio channels with Utah Highway Patrol units so all responders were on the same page, closing the freeway initially, then selectively reopening lanes as more troopers arrived. A Unified Command was established when the UHP area duty supervisor reported to the fire command post. Fire units cleared the scene at 1308 after a “hot wash” quick incident review at the rest area after the road was opened. Mountain Green Fire Protection District.
