Same for Hebrew, Neo Aramaic, Amharic, Tigrinya. #semitics
Most languages name things. Arabic connects them. Three letters at a time. Every root tells a story. Every word knows where it came from and why it exists.
Once you see it, you can’t unsee it.
#Semitics This Badawy makes cool videos. And yes, I stick to the idea that Egyptian Arabic is easier than Moroccan Arabic...(sorry @dystinct_avalon)
I find it fascinating that she switched to Levantine (Syrian) Arabic when she wants to clarify something...

3, 5:
Egyptian Arabic: talaata, khamsa
Hebrew: shalosh, khameesh
What I heard today: salaas, khamsa
#Linguistics. Today I heard a couple waiting in front of me say "salaas, khamsa."
(Mod Stand. Arabic: Thalaatha = 3, khamsa = 5)
I was thinking Amharic or a language from Eritrea. Curiosity kills the cat, so I asked: What language do you speak? "Tigrinya, we are from Eritrea."
For my fellow Westerners it's a bit awkward to hear 'Rafa' everywhere when it's RafaH. Ask a Palestinian or any other Arab or Mizrahi Jew in your network to pronounce it for you. And if you don't have one, arrange it. #Semitics
Today's #Semitics lesson learned: In Old Aramaic, like Biblical Hebrew and unlike Biblical Aramaic (ironically), we have wayyiqtol 📝

@alijla2021 #AntiSemitic what that's means? They have to prove first being #Semitics to blame #Antisemitism , many of us are genuinely #Semitics have been expelled from #genetic belonging!

Dear #Semitics folk—a q/n about the Canaanite shift.
When did *[ā] ⇒ [ō] stop happening (if it did)?
Is there a cut off date beyond which we wouldn’t expect, say, a non-Semitic word with an [ā] loaned into the Bible to end up as [ō] in the Tiberian tradition?
@drchiphardy?
Dear #Semitics folk. Wondering how best to view the Hebrew for ‘light’.
*[urr] ⇒ אוֹר in light of Akkadian (well attested), or *[ʔār] ⇒ אוֹר in light of Ugaritic ⟨ar⟩, or some other way?
Cognates below.

When I decided to make a 2nd MA after my 1st one in #Semitics (@FU_Berlin) I began studying general #linguistics (@HumboldtUni). This was for my own research interests. But in order to find a pre/post-doc position, it doesn't really matter if u're in Semitics or linguistics 😅...
Only a handful of institutions have 2 or more professors of general linguistics: Humboldt in Berlin (4), Düsseldorf (5), Konstanz (6.5), Leipzig (3), Mainz (2), Tübingen (3).

Dear #Semitics folk.
Is a [-Vd] suffix a thing?
I have ṣifrid/ṣifrud in Arabic as ‘nightingale’,
and Syriac ṣprd as ‘a little bird’.
A mental note: In Akkadian, like Ugaritic, the causative voice (C) is formed with the Š- prefix, unlike Hebrew and Aramaic that is formed with H- prefix 📝 #Semitics
