July 26 marks Senbero-ki, the death anniversary of a writer who loved cheap drinking spots, a name that carries the very essence of his personality.
#Ramo_Nakajima, a novelist and playwright active from the Showa through Heisei eras, passed away on July 26, 2004, at the age of 52. Born in 1952 in Amagasaki, Hyogo Prefecture, as the second son of a practicing dentist, his real name was #Yushi_Nakajima. His pen name is said to have been taken from #Komisaburo_Ramon, a silent-film-era actor known for sword-fighting roles. After graduating from the Department of Broadcasting at #Osaka_University_of_Arts in 1975, he took a job at a printing company in Osaka, working in advertising production and sales while beginning his career as a writer. He made his debut in 1979 with the self-published "#Subete_no_Seiya_no_Kusari," and went on to demonstrate remarkable range across fiction, playwriting, advertising, radio hosting, and music. The word "senbero" refers to a cheap bar where one can get pleasantly drunk for around a thousand yen, a type of unpretentious establishment Nakajima loved dearly. Together with editor #Jun_Kobori, he published "#Senbero_Tantei_ga_Iku" the year before his death, in 2003, and this affectionate term became the name of his death anniversary.
"#Konya_Subete_no_Bar_de" is known as a representative work exploring alcohol dependency, drawing heavily on his own hospitalization and widely praised for it. "#Gadara_no_Buta" stands as a long novel centered on sorcery and the occult that continues to attract new readers today. Though anecdotes about his unconventional life often overshadow his work, his writing carries a sharp eye for the weaknesses and struggles woven into urban life. In his later years, he faced turmoil after being arrested for violating Japan's cannabis control law, but even then he continued turning his experiences into work, writing the essay "#Roya_de_Yaseru_Diet" about his time in detention and holding a book signing event while still handcuffed. After his health declined and he was hospitalized, he never regained consciousness before passing away, and in accordance with his wishes expressed while alive, his funeral was held privately among family and close friends.
Beyond fiction and playwriting, Nakajima brought his distinctive voice to Kansai airwaves as a radio host and showed his musical side through band activities, refusing to be confined to any single title. Known for admiring writers such as #William_Burroughs, #Celine, and #Futaro_Yamada, his prose, backed by wide-ranging reading, reveals a meticulous craftsmanship that stands in contrast to his unruly public image.
