#sapsMP [TWO PERPETRATORS SENTENCED TO 20 YEARS' IMPRISONMENT EACH FOR GROOTVLEI FARM MURDER, ATTEMPTED MURDER AND ROBBERY]
The Provincial Commissioner of the #SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Apaphia Modise, has welcomed the #conviction and #sentencing of two perpetrators in connection with a farm attack that occurred in Grootvlei in July 2023.
The court heard that on 30 July 2023 at about 09:45, Police in Grootvlei received information about a farm attack. Upon arrival at the farm, they found the lifeless body of a 68-year-old male, with stab wounds. His wife, aged 65, was found with serious head injuries and was rushed to a medical facility for treatment. It was established that the perpetrators had robbed the couple of their vehicle, firearms, ammunition and electrical appliances.
Police activated a lookout and the stolen vehicle was later found overturned near Villiers. The four perpetrators were arrested on the scene by Villiers SAPS members.
The four arrested were identified as Siyabonga Ziqubu (18), Kgahliso Motaung (19), Samukelo Tshabalala (17) and Nkosingiphile Malinga (16) at the time.
The case was transferred from Balfour Magistrate’s Court to the Mpumalanga Division of the High Court which was sitting in Middelburg, where the perpetrators faced various charges, including murder, attempted murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, contravention of the Older Persons Act 13 of 2006, and contravention of the Firearms Control Act 60 of 2000.
On Thursday, 15 October 2026, two of the arrested persons, Nkosingiphile Malinga and Samukelo Tshabalala, entered into a plea and sentence agreement in terms of Section 105A of the Criminal Procedure Act. The plea was accepted by the court and they were sentenced as follows:
Nkosingiphile Malinga and Samukelo Tshabalala were sentenced as follows:
- On Count 01 (of Murder): the two were sentenced to 25 years' imprisonment, 05 years of which is suspended for 05 years on condition that the two are not convicted of murder.
- On Count 02 (Contravention of Older Persons Act): the two were sentenced to 02 years' imprisonment.
- On Count 03 (Attempted Murder): the two perpetrators were sentenced to 25 years' imprisonment, 05 years of which is suspended for 05 years, on condition that the two perpetrators are not convicted of attempted murder.
- On Count 04 (Contravention of Older Persons Act): the two were sentenced to 02 years' imprisonment.
- On Count 05 (Robbery with aggravating circumstances): the two were sentenced to 15 years' imprisonment.
- Count 06, 07 and 08 (Contravention of Firearms Control Act): the two were sentenced to 05 years' imprisonment each.
The court ordered that sentences in counts 02 to 08 run concurrently with count 01. Each accused will therefore effectively serve 20 years' imprisonment.
The cases against the other two accused, Siyabonga Ziqubu and Kgahliso Motaung, were separated and postponed to 06 to 17 November 2028 for trial in the Delmas High Court.
The investigating officer, of the Murder and Robbery Unit in Gert Sibande District, has been commended for his meticulous investigation which secured the conviction.
The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Apaphia Modise, has welcomed the sentence and commended the investigating team, prosecution and judiciary for ensuring justice for the victims.
“This sentencing should send a clear message that those who attack victims, including the farming communities and vulnerable elderly persons will face the full might of the law. We commend the excellent work by our Murder and Robbery Unit and all role players who ensured this conviction,” said the General.

EXTRADITED DOUBLE MURDER ACCUSED FROM LESOTHO TO SOUTH AFRICA SENTENCED TO LIFE IMPRISONMENT
The South African Police Service in the Free State has secured the #conviction and #sentencing of two accused who were extradited from Lesotho after committing a #DoubleMurder that shocked the community in June 2024.
Two of the accused, Tumelo Tsiu (32), a Lesotho national, and Lineo Walatsa (30), also a Lesotho national, were apprehended in Lesotho in July 2024 and brought back to South Africa to face justice. A third accused, Seun Moloi, died after being shot five times two weeks before the trial commenced.
Both accused were sentenced in the Ficksburg High Court on 23 October 2026. The successful conviction follows collaboration between the Investigating Officer, Warrant Officer M.D. Machalotsa, Prosecutor Advocate Lucky Bontes, and Judge Mrs Mbhele.
Background:
The suspects initially appeared in the Ladybrand Magistrate's Court on 7 January 2025. The case was postponed to 13 January 2025 for the appointment of legal representation.
The extradition follows months of meticulous collaboration between #SAPS and Lesotho law enforcement agencies, facilitated through international legal frameworks. The suspects allegedly fled to Lesotho after the murders that occurred at the Maseru Bridge Port of Entry on 11 June 2024.
Police were summoned to an incident at the long-distance taxi drop-off near the Border Post following reports of a shooting. On arrival, officers discovered the bodies of Moholi Mohapi, also known as "Bohome" (31), and Rebone David Sephaka, also known as "Serurubele" (40), lying in a pool of blood next to a taxi they had just alighted from.
It was alleged that an unknown number of males disembarked from a white Isuzu bakkie and opened fire on passengers exiting the taxi, which was travelling from Johannesburg. After the shooting, the suspects fled in the bakkie.
A swift response led to the vehicle being intercepted on the R26 near Manyatseng by Ladybrand police. However, two suspects fled into the darkness, leaving behind the driver. A subsequent search of the vehicle uncovered a 9mm firearm, which was confiscated. The driver, Seun Gert Moloi (30), was arrested, appeared in the Ladybrand Magistrate's Court, and was granted bail of R8 000.
The two accused were charged with: Murder of Mohapi alias Bohome, Murder of Sephaka, Attempted murder of Mr Sekantsi, Attempted murder of Mr Pitso, Possession of unlicensed firearm, Possession of unlicensed ammunition, Conspiracy to commit crime and Contravention of the Immigration Act.
They were found guilty and sentenced as follows:
- Count 1: Murder - sentenced to life imprisonment
- Count 2: Murder - sentenced to life imprisonment
- Count 3: Attempted murder - sentenced to life imprisonment
- Count 4: Attempted murder - sentenced to life imprisonment
- Count 5: Possession of unlicensed firearm - not guilty
- Count 7: Conspiracy to commit murder - not guilty
- Count 8: Illegal immigrant - sentenced to 9 months' imprisonment.
