Un David Niven inconmensurable ganó el #PremioÓscar al mejor actor por su papel, estableciendo el récord actual de actuación más corta para ganar el premio: 15 minutos y 38 segundos. En el coqueto y modesto hotelito de la costa británica que regenta la señorita Pat Cooper (#WendyHiller) se da cita un curioso grupo de huéspedes residentes, cada uno con su propia historia, pero, a su vez, extrañamente envueltos en los avatares de sus compañeros de alojamiento. El primero, la relación que la dueña de la casa mantiene, más o menos secretamente, con el periodista John Malcolm (#BurtLancaster), un hombre que arrastra un pasado de desencanto y frustación que lo mantiene anclado a la bebida. Por otra parte, la joven Sibyl (#DeborahKerr), una muchacha tímida y pusilánime, no logra sacudirse el dominio que sobre ella ejerce su madre, Mrs. Railton-Bell (#GladysCooper), que pasa sus días en compañía de otra vieja chismosa, Lady Matheson (#CathleenNesbitt). El gran animador del lugar es el comandante Pollock (David Niven), militar retirado que no cesa de recordar sus experiencias en el norte de África durante la #SegundaGuerraMundial. Otros huéspedes más o menos circunstanciales son Fowler, veterano profesor de cultura griega (#FelixAylmer), Miss Meacham (#MayHallatt), una solterona obsesionada con las apuestas, y dos jóvenes novios que, ante los demás, se hacen pasar por estudiantes que preparan sus exámenes de Medicina (#RodTaylor y #AudreyDalton). El pacífico equilibro del tranquilo aburrimiento del hotel se quiebra debido a una doble circunstancia: en primer lugar, la llegada de Ann Shankland (#RitaHayworth), un personaje famoso del mundo de las revistas del corazón que es, además, la antigua esposa de Malcolm. En segundo término, la publicación de una noticia en la prensa que cubre de vergüenza a uno de los huéspedes, y que, además, revela la falsedad de su identidad. Una película estupenda sobre las relaciones y los sentimientos escrita para el #Cine por el autor de la obra de teatro en que se inspira, #TerenceRattigan, y el guionista #JohnGay. «Mesas separadas», dirigida por Delbert Mann tres años después de la excelente #Marty (1955), constituye, sobre todo, un recital interpretativo fabuloso. Y lo consigue contrastando dos escuelas completamente opuestas, la británica, consolidada principalmente gracias a su tradición teatral tan sublime, y la estadounidense en su versión ajena a #Broadway, la edificada en torno a #Hollywood. Como buena adaptación teatral, «Mesas separadas» aprovecha las limitaciones espaciales de la historia. El director divide el espacio del hotel para formar diferentes escenarios paralelos y repartir las presencias y ausencias de los personajes, sus encuentros y diálogos, con las zonas comunes como foco de atención principal, con excursiones puntuales a determinadas habitaciones, la cocina, la recepción, las dependencias privadas de Pat o la terraza exterior, poseedora esta de un valor narrativo fundamental en la relación retomada entre Ann y Malcolm. Lógicamente, la gran fuerza de la historia radica en el texto y en el reparto. El texto y el reparto administran maravillosamente los distintos giros del argumento y la inversión de la carga moral y emocional de las sucesivas escenas. Unas escenas que alteran las relaciones y estados de ánimo de los personajes. Unas relaciones y estados de ánimo en las que sobresalen la nobleza y el anhelo de romper con la soledad en la que viven todos estos seres humanos. Parecen islas próximas a la costa pero incomunicadas con ella. Lo que más me gusta de «Mesas separadas» es el retrato colectivo que hace de los personajes y sus relaciones, ya que ofrece un mosaico bastante completo de los avatares de las relaciones amorosas entre un hombre y una mujer.

I had to check this after watching #SeparateTables. With 23 minutes and 39 seconds of screen time, David Niven's performance is the shortest ever to win an Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role, and the fourth-shortest to win in either leading category. Contrary to popular belief, Anthony Hopkins did not break Niven's record with his win for The Silence of the Lambs (1991); Hopkins' performance is 24 minutes and 52 seconds long.
