On #ServiceDogSaturday, we’re throwing it back to one of the most legendary pups in military history—Smoky the war dog! 🐾🇺🇸
Discovered in a foxhole in the jungles of New Guinea, this tiny Yorkshire Terrier was anything but small in spirit. Smoky served alongside Corporal William A. Wynne during WWII, flying in over a dozen missions, surviving air raids and even a typhoon, all while riding around in a backpack.
One of her greatest feats? Crawling through a narrow, soil-filled 70-foot pipe to help run crucial telegraph wires—saving engineers from days of dangerous digging under enemy fire. And if that wasn’t enough, Smoky became the first recorded therapy dog, bringing joy and comfort to wounded troops in hospitals for years.
From foxholes to frontlines to hospital wards—Smoky showed the world what one little dog with a big heart can do. ❤️🐶

Happy #ServiceDogSaturday and thank you to Northwest High School for inviting our Advanced Training crew to a play!

This #ServiceDogSaturday, meet Officer Kora, the Asheville Police Department’s beloved therapy dog and the 2024 winner of the First Responder Paws Therapy Dog Award! 🎉🐶
During the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, as officers worked tirelessly in devastating conditions, Kora became a source of comfort and relief.
Congratulations to Kora and the Asheville PD! 💙 May her story inspire more departments to invest in therapy dogs for those who serve and protect.

For this week’s #ServiceDogSaturday, we honor Layka, a true K-9 hero whose bravery and sacrifice saved countless lives.
In May 2012, while serving in Afghanistan, Layka, was sent into an enemy compound to secure the area and search for explosives. Despite being shot four times by an AK-47, she subdued the combatant while protecting her handler, U.S. Army Ranger Julian McDonald. Despite immediate medical assistance, Layka's injuries led to the loss of her right leg.
Her incredible story of loyalty and courage has inspired many, even serving as an influence for the movie Dog, starring Channing Tatum. Layka has been celebrated with numerous awards, including:
🐾 A Medal of Heroism from the 341st Training Squadron, 33rd Fighter Wing
🐾 A portrait feature on the cover of National Geographic in 2014
🐾 A spotlight in the American Humane Hero Dog Awards in 2016
🐾 A recent honor from the Daughters of American Colonists at The National WWII Museum in 2023
Layka is a reminder of the profound bond between K-9 heroes and their handlers. Thank you, Layka, for your extraordinary service. 🐾💙

This #ServiceDogSaturday, we’re spotlighting the incredible story of Ruby, a shelter dog turned hero police K9. Ruby’s journey began at the Rhode Island SPCA, where she was returned five times due to her high energy. But thanks to the dedication of volunteer Patricia Inman and Corporal Dan O’Neil, Ruby found her calling.
As the first shelter dog to join the Rhode Island State Police K9 Unit, Ruby excelled in human remains detection and search and rescue. In 2017, Ruby’s training came full circle when she located a missing boy—who turned out to be Patricia’s son. This heartwarming story of resilience and redemption shows the power of second chances. 🐾❤️
You can learn more about Ruby's extraordinary life in the Netflix film Rescued by Ruby.

This #ServiceDogSaturday, we recognize K-9 Sgt. Taker! In 2012, Kevin Zuniga and his family welcomed K-9 Sgt. Taker, a bomb-sniffing Labrador retriever, into their home after his service with the U.S. Marine Corps. Taker had been Kevin’s trusted companion on dangerous missions in Afghanistan, where his work saved countless lives.
Once home, Taker seamlessly became a therapy dog, helping the family de-stress and heal emotionally. His bond with his family shows how service dogs not only protect but provide lifelong support to their handlers and their loved ones.
Thank you, Taker, for your service. 💙
