It was the first time the 40 mile crossing of #SouthGeorgia had been attempted and included the 3 men descending 3000ft of icey slopes in only a few minutes by using a makeshift sledge made of rope. #SGSSIdiscover #ShackletonDay

Happy #ShackletonDay to The Boss! Don't think he ever visited Svalbard, but he was connected to the Northern Exploration Company, who set up the ill-fated Ny-London marble mine opposite where we now have the @NERCscience Arctic Station. It's our link and we're proud of it😉
