Remembering my friend and brother #ShamnadBasheer that shooting star that lit up so many lives, who started @SpicyIP and left it in such great hands, who conceived and started @IDIALaw and again left it awesome hands to take forward. Staggering to think he did so much in his brief life, left so much good karma, so many amazing memories. Amazing once in a lifetime time friend, friend and confidant to so many, brother beyond blood ties, mentor to so many young people whose lives he changed forever, and for the better. If ever there was a karmayogi it was Shamnad. I miss that boy. It hurts terribly on some days now years after he went and on other days you can’t help but marvel at that damn fellow.

Justice Iyer wasn’t a good writer either. He often disregarded two of George Orwell’s golden rules for good writing: (i) never use a long word where a short one will do, and (ii) if it is possible to cut a word out, always cut it out. His writing was overly verbose and complex.
I started my first law firm placement a.k.a my “first job” in October 1999, when I was 28. The kids who started with me were at 22/23 #ShamnadBasheer was 23/24 - I felt everyday that I was doomed with my age and coming as I did from a small town and even more smaller unknown law school (and frankly calling it a “law school” was a gross overstatement). I had qualified in 1997 but I literally learnt the law starting in 1999. It helped that I had always read very widely, have a photographic memory and could write /draft decently well. I am 53 now and 26/27 years later, feel everyday that I am still learning the law. At times it can be frustrating, but mostly for me, exhilarating and exciting - because I love what I do and learning something new each day drives me even more. I still feel driven because of the associates and Sr Associates in my firm and not the partners or other senior colleagues - only because of the sheer ‘nuclear energy’ these young people bring to the table. Age matters but can never be a barrier or reason not to do anything even if you are older than I was, as long as you like or love what you want to do. Enjoy and bask in the freedom you feel when you realise your mind can break free of almost any constraints or rules society imposes when you do something you love.
