Eight years ago this month, #CoralGables installed #bike “infrastructure”. It was #sharrows. I think we all agree it is not #infrastructure
Since then, they installed sharrows on Miracle Mile and prohibit bikes on the #sidewalks. That’s not progress. It’s dangerous.
#Sharrows is a portmanteau of "shitty arrows". These are the markings that @CityofRegina has on McCarthy Blvd. while it calls it a "bike route". In reality, it's a parking lane with ishty arrows painted in it, to lure cyclists into the door zone and an early grave.

According to National Safety Council, the total cost of motor vehicle deaths, injuries, property damage is $400-500 billion per year. That includes medical expenses, lost wages, repairs, etc.
Cost of a single traffic fatality ranges ~$1-15 million per victim, measured by age and earning potential of the victim.
These costs are not included in standard corridor studies, traffic analysis studies, intersection feasibility studies, etc. Public agencies don't ask for it, and consultants don't think to calculate it.
I wonder how many deadly infrastructure projects would've been prevented simply by "the benefit/cost ratio is too low" result of a study. Not even considering the social impacts of traffic violence.

I don't live there and avoid going to that city, but I applauded Makati's bicycle initiative during covid. It's too bad they couldn't take more steps forward and opted to go back to the darker ages. Disappointing. #sharrows
