VIDEO | Aditi Chauhan, former Indian women’s football team captain and the first Indian woman to play professionally in Europe, has called for urgent structural reforms in Indian women’s football, while committing herself to developing the next generation through her initiative, the SheKicks Football League. “You know, we've seen over these past, especially in the last few months, how women's football has grown, not just in India, but across the world. And we've seen the recent success of the senior team as well as the junior team, the youth team doing so well. And I've always known that the talent exists in India. There's no lack of talent. We are a huge population, so obviously there can't be lack of talent. It's about the lack of structure, lack of pathway, lack of platforms like these. This is something that was missing when I was playing as well. Back in like 13-14 years back when I started playing, we didn't have proper coaching. I was a goalkeeper, so we didn't have goalkeeper coach, we didn't have competitions. You can't just be training, you need platforms to be competitive as well. Unless and until you compete and you play, that's when you really realise how much of application you're doing of the training sessions in the matches where it matters. All of those experiences, I thought I need to come back to India and implement this here. Enough talking about it and waiting for someone else to take an initiative and do something. Even if it's a small initiative from my own capacity, whatever I can do, let's start with that and see. Let's get more people behind it and support their vision. I think one of the main differences is the existence of structure there. We have a lot of academies, we have NGOs working in women's football trying to bridge that gap and provide training. But unless that training is being implemented in competitions, you'll never see how they're improving, how the kids are improving.
