📢 #ShellFoundation is seeking an Investment Director and Regional Lead to join the Transporters portfolio to fund e-mobility solutions.
The successful candidate will identify, evaluate, and manage investments and large-scale commercial partnerships that materially increase transporters’ (in Africa and India) incomes.
Responsibilities span across all stages of deal execution, including building a pipeline of potential investments, structuring and negotiating deals, conducting due diligence and preparing proposals for approval, and successful implementation. The Investment Director will also play a critical role in developing the portfolio’s strategy and annual business plan. We are seeking a self-starter with exceptional strategic thinking and planning, analytical, and communication skills. Previous experience in the energy or electric mobility sector would be advantageous.
As a Regional Lead, the individual will play a significant leadership role to the East Africa team based in Nairobi. They will represent Shell Foundation externally to build strategic relationships and partnerships with key stakeholders and provide strategic advisory to executive-level management and wider Shell Foundation team on East African regional-specific strategies and insights, through a localised- and consumer-driven lens.

New research shows that tackling Post-Harvest Loss is a $1 trillion opportunity to empower smallholder farmers. #ShellFoundation, in partnership with @FCDOGovUK, is proud to share new research that addresses one of the most pressing challenges in global agriculture: post-harvest loss (#PHL).
#DYK that PHL affects over 400 million smallholder farmers worldwide, reducing the value of their harvests by up to 15% annually? In #India, #Nigeria, and #Kenya alone, these losses exceed $21 billion each year. Beyond economic impact, PHL contributes to 8–10% of global greenhouse gas emissions, making it a critical issue for both food security and climate resilience.
The research was a combined effort between @FactorEVentures, ISF Advisors, AndMore Associates, LLCC, and @MicroSave, commissioned by Shell Foundation, with co-funding from UK aid by the UK government through the #CASEE programme. It aims to explore and identify low-cost, practical, and scalable solutions that could address the energy needs of smallholder farmers towards reducing post-harvest loss. It forms part of Shell Foundation’s broader strategy aimed at enabling 850,000 farmers to increase their earnings while reducing emissions via clean energy solutions over five years.
The research highlights practical interventions such as:

Since 2015, #ShellFoundation, co-funded by UK aid from the UK government via @TEAEnergyAccess platform, has invested over $7 million in early-stage ventures across Sub-Saharan #Africa and #India to unlock the potential of sustainable cooling.
Partnering with innovators like @Inficold_Inc, @keepitcoolapp, East Africa Fruits, @InspiraFarms, and SureChill, Shell Foundation has tested business models, product innovations, and financing strategies to support smallholder farmers and microentrepreneurs.
Key challenges stem from systemic barriers:
🔹 High capital costs make cooling solutions unaffordable for small-scale users
🔹 Limited energy access in rural areas restricts the deployment of cooling technologies
🔹 Fragmented value chains mean cooling is often disconnected from market access, reducing its effectiveness
Sustainable cooling can reduce post-harvest losses by up to 30%, improving food quality and enabling access to better markets. However, 526 million tonnes of food are lost globally each year due to inadequate cooling with up to 40% of perishable produce lost in Africa and India, cutting smallholder farmers’ incomes by up to 15%.

📢 New report from Shell Foundation: Assessment of Women Livelihoods within the Climate-Smart sector
#ShellFoundation is proud to announce the release of our latest report, developed in collaboration with @OCA_Africa, with co-funding with UK aid from the UK Government through the @TEAEnergyAccess platform. This report highlights the potential for women's employment and entrepreneurship in climate-smart sectors across Sub-Saharan #Africa. By 2030, the research estimates up to 1.2 million new jobs for low-income women in clean cooking, food and agri-processing, and e-mobility sectors.
To maximise the potential for employment and entrepreneurship for low-income women within the climate-smart sectors, it is important to identify and address some of the key challenges that these #women face, including gender biases, social stereotypes, and limited access to mentorship, training and finance.
The report provides recommendations that address the root-causes of the challenges. It also goes one-step further in grounding the recommendations by including design considerations that must be factored in for certain recommendations to be practical, implementable and bring about outcomes that are sought.

“There are over 3 million motorcycle drivers in #Kenya and through this initiative with #ShellFoundation and @FCDOGovUK, not only have we been able to provide life-changing financing to motorcycle drivers, but we've been able to involve women more in a sector that is not typically open and welcoming to women” said Dustin Kahler, Director of Mobility at @mkopakenya.

📢New research from #ShellFoundation: Exploring the potential of under-researched productive uses of energy ⚡!
Shell Foundation commissioned research from The Future of Energy, co-funded with UK aid from the UK government’s @TEAEnergyAccess, to explore the complex landscape of Productive Uses of Energy (#PUE) solutions. The research highlights 10 less-documented PUE applications that are transforming the livelihoods of micro-entrepreneurs in #India, #Kenya, and #Nigeria. Some of the PUE applications studied are: cooling (refrigeration and freezing), retail food and beverage preparation (cooking and juicing), textiles, ICT and hairdressing.
The research found that the impact on customers who used PUE include:
📈80% of PUE users reported an increase in their incomes
📈$57 monthly income increase for solar-powered refrigerator users in India
📈25% income increase for cold room customers in Kenya
The research also highlighted some challenges and solutions, including:
🔹Market fragmentation
🔹Funding mismatches
🔹High upfront costs
🔹Detrimental importation regulations
🔹Limited consumer awareness
🔹Gender-specific barriers
