Refrigeration extends the shelf life of produce and wastage has now been reduced by 98%. Keep IT Cool increases incomes and reduces emissions caused by food waste. In 2024, Keep IT Cool won the The @EarthshotPrize in the ‘Build a Waste-Free World’ category.

📢 New report from Shell Foundation: Assessment of Women Livelihoods within the Climate-Smart sector
#ShellFoundation is proud to announce the release of our latest report, developed in collaboration with @OCA_Africa, with co-funding with UK aid from the UK Government through the @TEAEnergyAccess platform. This report highlights the potential for women's employment and entrepreneurship in climate-smart sectors across Sub-Saharan #Africa. By 2030, the research estimates up to 1.2 million new jobs for low-income women in clean cooking, food and agri-processing, and e-mobility sectors.
To maximise the potential for employment and entrepreneurship for low-income women within the climate-smart sectors, it is important to identify and address some of the key challenges that these #women face, including gender biases, social stereotypes, and limited access to mentorship, training and finance.
The report provides recommendations that address the root-causes of the challenges. It also goes one-step further in grounding the recommendations by including design considerations that must be factored in for certain recommendations to be practical, implementable and bring about outcomes that are sought.

📢New research from #ShellFoundation: Exploring the potential of under-researched productive uses of energy ⚡!
Shell Foundation commissioned research from The Future of Energy, co-funded with UK aid from the UK government’s @TEAEnergyAccess, to explore the complex landscape of Productive Uses of Energy (#PUE) solutions. The research highlights 10 less-documented PUE applications that are transforming the livelihoods of micro-entrepreneurs in #India, #Kenya, and #Nigeria. Some of the PUE applications studied are: cooling (refrigeration and freezing), retail food and beverage preparation (cooking and juicing), textiles, ICT and hairdressing.
The research found that the impact on customers who used PUE include:
📈80% of PUE users reported an increase in their incomes
📈$57 monthly income increase for solar-powered refrigerator users in India
📈25% income increase for cold room customers in Kenya
The research also highlighted some challenges and solutions, including:
🔹Market fragmentation
🔹Funding mismatches
🔹High upfront costs
🔹Detrimental importation regulations
🔹Limited consumer awareness
🔹Gender-specific barriers

Our latest research report, conducted by @OCA_Africa, with funding from the UK’s @FCDOResearch explores how #guarantees can attract investors to fill financing gaps in the agriculture sector in emerging markets. By reducing the risk for investors and lenders, guarantees can bring in new capital and open new markets.
The research report highlights the important role of ecosystem players and provides key recommendations for effective design and implementation of guarantees. With guarantees now ODA-eligible, more donors are expected to participate in issuing and funding guarantees, which should unlock critical investment for smallholder farmers across Sub-Saharan Africa. Furthermore, the report showcases real-life case studies from @AfDB_Group, @AceliAfrica, @Rabobank Foundation, @GuarantCo, and @FCDOGovUK among others, as well as actionable recommendations to enhance the effectiveness of guarantees.

The Climate and Finance Innovations (#ClimaFii) Alliance will provide catalytic support to climate enterprises and financial service providers to bridge the gap between #EnergyAccess and financial inclusion for microenterprises across the regions.
Accion will work with financial service providers to design affordable financial products that enable micro-entrepreneurs to access climate solutions. BFA Global and Upaya Social Ventures will support climate enterprises in sub-Saharan Africa and India, respectively, to design and develop emission-reducing technologies specifically to benefit small business owners.

At the Mastercard MADE launch event, #ShellFoundation’s Head of Smallholder Farmers Portfolio Meera Shah joined partners from @Mastercard, @AfDB_Group, @Microsoft, @Heifer, @DFCgov and others discussed investing in the digital economy in #Africa with Mastercard’s EVP and Community Pass Founder Tara Nathan.
Digital inclusion is a pre-cursor to economic inclusion. In 2024 we launched the ‘Harvesting Green Energy for Smallholder Farmers’ initiative in partnership with Mastercard and the @Coopbankenya, which introduces clean energy solutions for smallholder farmers – a critical target beneficiary group for Shell Foundation – onto Mastercard’s Farm Pass platform as well as affordable financing from the Co-Operative Bank of Kenya.
Shell Foundation provided a grant subsidy to the programme to reduce interest rates for smallholder farmers, and is co-managing the piloting of six income-generating energy assets, which increase farmers’ productivity and when combined with market access enables better loan repayment. Shell Foundation’s contribution was co-funded with UK aid from the UK Government via the Catalysing Agriculture partnership between Shell Foundation and the UK’s @FCDOGovUK.

Last week, #ShellFoundation received the "Community Impact Award" at the “EMFAI Sustainable Mobility Summit 2024” held in Delhi. The award recognises Shell Foundation for its significant contributions to sustainable mobility, the development of a robust electric vehicle ecosystem, and its widespread adoption in hashtag#India.
The @EMFAIndia Sustainable Mobility Summit brought together industry, government, OEMs, and fleet operators to explore innovative financing mechanisms to overcome barriers to EV adoption, discuss policy frameworks and regulatory measures to accelerate the shift to electric mobility and best practices in the EV industry in India.
Shell Foundation has been working in India supporting the EV ecosystem at grassroot level to improve livelihoods of the people at the bottom of pyramid from the early #EV days. We support individual organisations, like @revfinindia and Mufin Green Finance, and recently in 2023 by introducing innovative instrument “EV- Risk Sharing facility” in partnership with @sidbiofficial to de-risk the lenders in the ecosystem encouraging access to finance for underserved communities.

The investment in SunCulture seeks to provide 100,000 smallholder farmers—including 40,000 women farmers—access to affordable credit to buy clean energy tools that support farmers’ incomes, such as solar-powered irrigation pumps. The program will also prioritise gender-sensitive financial literacy training for farmers. The program aims to create additional economic opportunities by ensuring that at least 70% of the digital field agents working directly with farmers are women.

At the Africa CEO Forum 2024 in Kigali, Rwanda last week, #ShellFoundation hosted the “Corporate Pathways to Scale Energy Access” breakfast event.
The event brought together innovators, incubators, large business and financial leaders to discuss how to accelerate energy solutions that increase income and cut emissions to create deep, sustainable socio-economic growth. This growth is critical to making the energy transition effective for all, it must serve both emerging and developed markets, women and men, end customers, and company stakeholders.
We heard from @AFEXNigeria's Group CEO Ayodeji Balogun on the need to increase the representation of the people who are affected by the problems we are trying to solve in the design process of solutions. And we heard from several leaders around the need to build partnerships quickly that are risk-adjusted to meet the needs and mandates of multiple actors.

Today, at the #ACF2024 panel session “The Silent P: Adding Philanthropy to Public-Private Partnerships”, #ShellFoundation’s Chief Programme Officer, Richard Gomes, joined other leaders in the sector to discuss how philanthropic organisations can play a convening role between the private and public sectors.
Drawing on over 20 years’ experience in developing inclusive energy solutions that are agile, risk-tolerant and customer focused, Richard highlighted that Shell Foundation has:
🔹Improved the lives of more than 274m people across the Global South
🔹Mobilised $9.7 billion of follow-on finance for energy access solutions
🔹Reduced 67.53m tonnes of co2 or co2 equivalent emissions
These results have been accomplished through strategic partnerships, like with @FCDOGovUK and @DFCgov, but there is still much more to be done. Richard emphasised the critical role of partnerships between philanthropies, public, and private actors in achieving rapid scalability providing examples of our partnerships with @Mastercard, @Coopbankenya and @DavisShirtliff as proof of bespoke solutions.
In closing, Richard stressed that for the #EnergyTransition to work for anyone, it must work for everyone. This means that it must work for the Global North and the Global South, men and women, end customer and company stakeholders.
