🍂🐦⬛If you'd like to support my writing and recuperation, then why not visit my little Etsy shop - there are masses of autumnal 1950s Shell Natural History posters for sale - prices ranging from £15 to £60, with more added every day! https://t.co/NsZlWG48pL

For sale! The #ShellGuide to #Monmouthshire, as imagined by #WalterHoyle.
'Although it is small, it is good here.'
For sale! After Kent, #Herefordshire is the English county that means most to me, with a family member living in a stone cottage that looks into Wales. The delightful #ShellGuide evokes many of the things that those who know the county love. Is there such a person in your life?
For sale! The Shell Guide to Herefordshire, a particularly interesting poster from the series. Designed by the Great Bardfield artist, John Aldridge, it evokes the county in a miscellany of images: the stone carvings of Kilpeck, the Welsh and English road signs of the Marches, hops and ripening apples and pears for cider and perry, mistletoe, more plentiful here than in any other county, and a portrait of Nell Gwyn, beloved daughter of Hereford. The bucolic rolling border country with its tumps and ruined castles and ancient farmhouses leads to the Black Mountains in the far distance, gateway to Wales. Price: £50. For sale! The collage style of this #ShellGuide is unusual, I think. Coupled with the central stone, for me it conjures #Wiltshire as a patchwork county of deep history and (as @AnneLouiseAvery says) old magic—the whisper of ancient barrows rising from farmers' everyday fields.
For sale! The iconic "Shell Guide to Wiltshire" poster by the Ladybird artist Keith Grant. Harvest fields! Avebury! White horses! Old magic! Price: £35. Dm to buy or purchase directly from my Etsy shop here: https://t.co/gzMgKA944z

For sale! I don't have a place for this, sadly, but it is a fascinating snapshot of #Kent. I love the inclusion of Samuel Palmer's work, art within art. #ShellGuide #RowlandHilder
For sale! The Shell Guide to Kent, a 1950s original poster by Rowland Hilder depicting the characteristics of the county in still-life and landscape. There are red cherries and hops and cobnuts, oast-houses and the great Cinque ports, the Murder in the Cathedral and Samuel Palmer's vast moon rising over the wheat fields. Price: £35. “February. Another cold, dead month, or so it seems. The elms are bare against the sky, the plough-ground is naked and wet, and still as brown as the sodden leaves.
Yet the world is waking up”. (1955)

“March is specially the month of Blackthorn, the creamy buds and white flowers exquisite upon their twigs of ebony. It is the month also of daisies, opening their eyes among the grass (daisy does mean ‘day’s eye’)”

‘January’
“Not everything speaks of the old year.
The clouds may lean on the hill with a certainty of snow. But look deep into the hedges and ditches & you will find the first small green leaves of the new spring beginning to uncurl”

Despite feigning non-interest in shops being open again, I rushed to the RSPCA bookshop at lunchtime where this had been taunting me from the window since the start of lockdown..#shellguide #psychogeography #shamelessconsumerbehaviour
