Loung Ung was five years old when her mother told her to put on every piece of clothing she owned.
#It was April 17, 1975.
Armed teenagers in black uniforms were moving through Phnom Penh.
They carried rifles.
#Shouted through megaphones.
Ordered families to leave their homes immediately.
They said American bombers were coming.
#They promised everyone could return in three days.
#Loung believed them.
She put on three layers of clothes and thought she was going on some strange family trip.
#She never saw her home again.
•The teenagers belonged to the Khmer Rouge.
•Their leader, Pol Pot, wanted to rebuild Cambodia by destroying almost everything modern.
•Money disappeared.
•Schools disappeared.
•Hospitals disappeared.
•Books disappeared.
•Cities were emptied.
•Millions of people were forced into the countryside and made to work in rice fields under brutal conditions.
#Loung was the sixth of seven children.
•Her father had worked for the previous government.
•He understood immediately what that meant.
•The new regime was targeting educated people, officials, teachers, doctors, and anyone connected to the old system.
•His family was in danger.
•So he made a decision no parent should ever have to make.
•He separated his children.
•The older ones were sent away under false names.
•They were warned never to reveal who their father was.
•The family that had once eaten together and slept under one roof was scattered for survival.
#By the time Loung was seven, she was living in a children’s labor camp.
•Food was almost nonexistent.
•Sometimes she survived on only a few spoonfuls of watery rice porridge.
•Children were forced to attend political sessions.
•They were taught obedience.
#Fear.
#Hatred.
•Eventually, Loung was sent to a training camp where children practiced with wooden weapons.
•The regime wanted to create young soldiers.
•To erase family loyalty.
•To replace childhood memories with ideology.
#But before they were separated, Loung’s father had given her something stronger.
•A simple instruction.
•Remember who you are.
So she did.
Quietly.
Secretly.
Inside her mind.
#She remembered her real name.
She remembered fried chicken.
Soda.
Movie theaters.
The streets of Phnom Penh.
•Her parents’ faces.
Those memories became a private rebellion.
The regime could control where she slept.
•What she ate.
•What she said.
But it could not completely control what she remembered.
Then the losses came.
#Her father was taken away and killed.
#Later, her mother and little sister disappeared.
#One by one, pieces of her family vanished.
#By January 1979, the Khmer Rouge regime had collapsed.
#Roughly 1.7 million people were dead.
Nearly a quarter of Cambodia.
#Loung was nine years old.
•Both parents were gone.
•Three siblings were gone.
#She had survived.
But survival did not mean the nightmare was over.
Her older brother Meng took responsibility for the remaining children.
Eventually, he made another painful decision.
#He would escape Cambodia by boat.
And he could only take Loung with him.
#She was the youngest.
The one with the greatest chance of starting again.
After months in a refugee camp in Thailand, they were sponsored by a church and sent to Vermont.
#Loung arrived in America around ten years old.
She spoke no English.
•She carried memories few classmates could imagine.
For years, she tried to hide them.
She wanted to fit in.
To become ordinary.
To stop being the child from the camps.
But trauma does not disappear simply because the geography changes.
In 1995, Loung returned to Cambodia.
Standing near the killing fields changed something inside her.
She decided silence was no longer enough.
She would tell the story.
#In 2000, she published First They Killed My Father.
#The memoir later became a Netflix film directed by Angelina Jolie.
#But Loung did more than write about the past.
She became an activist against landmines.
