After months in a refugee camp in Thailand, they were sponsored by a church and sent to Vermont.
#Loung arrived in America around ten years old.
She spoke no English.
•She carried memories few classmates could imagine.
For years, she tried to hide them.
She wanted to fit in.
To become ordinary.
To stop being the child from the camps.
But trauma does not disappear simply because the geography changes.
In 1995, Loung returned to Cambodia.
Standing near the killing fields changed something inside her.
She decided silence was no longer enough.
She would tell the story.
#In 2000, she published First They Killed My Father.
#The memoir later became a Netflix film directed by Angelina Jolie.
#But Loung did more than write about the past.
She became an activist against landmines.
