Let’s review the three primary high speed weapons the US Air Force is investing in. First up is the Stand-In-Attack-Weapon. The ‘Stand-In’ in SiAW refers to the intended platforms employing the weapon and not the weapon itself. SiAW is a high speed weapon designed to fit inside internal bays of 5th and 6th generation fighters and other strike aircraft (B-21). USAF’s interim SiAW is an AARGM-ER derived weapon with additional USAF specified enhancements. Relative to the AGM-88 HARM, AARGM-ER more than doubles the range within a similar time-off flight (much faster weapon). Top speed is expected to be somewhere b/w Mach 4-5 and its intended target set includes Theater Ballistic Missile Launchers, Land Attack and Anti-Ship Cruise Missile Launchers, Jammers, Anti-Satellite Systems, and Integrated Air Defense Systems. Several of these targets would be time-sensitive or of high value with the combination of advanced stealthy aircraft able to penetrate closer to the target, and the high speed nature of the weapon allowing successful targeting.
