"The Stand-In Attack Weapon #SiAW program is currently executing a Middle Tier Acquisition Rapid Prototyping phase. MTA will conclude with a production decision and potential future development for additional capabilities. The SiAW program..has discovered the opportunity for additional possible high-payoff capabilities for the SiAW if additional resources are applied. [The Air Force will award a] new IDIQ contract with a base ordering period of 2.5 years, with 7 one-year options, for Subsystem Development to Northrop Grumman Systems Corporation to provide resources for tasks and scope that is within the approved MTA Rapid Prototyping acquisition strategy, but outside the current weapon system prototyping contract" ~ US Air Force

For those new here, the Stand-in Attack Weapon #SiAW is USAF's #HARM replacement. SiAW is required to have a capability to strike rapidly re-locatable targets that "create the Anti-Access/Area Denial (A2/AD) environment for 5th Generation and Future Advanced Aircraft". Targets including Theater Ballistic Missile Launchers, Land Attack and Anti-Ship Cruise Missile Launchers, Jammers, Anti-Satellite Systems, and IADS.
It is one of the first, if not the first, USAF missiles being designed under the AF's digital acquisition approach leveraging modular open system architectures, model based systems engineering, and other service defined standards.
US Navy's AARGM-ER with an upgraded Warhead, fuze and UAI based F-35 integration provides interim #SiAW capability while the AF works under the digital framework to develop the enduring SiAW solution. EOC is planned in the next 12-18 months.

The Air Force’s High-speed Anti-Radiation Missile replacement weapon program #SiAW is being handled (contracting) by someone named Harms. I kid you not. (USAF)

As expected (FY-2026 docs), USAF's Stand In Attack Weapon #SiAW will be integrated on the F-47 Next Generation Air Dominance #NGAD fighter. This is consistent with the Counter Air mission the F-47 is designed to perform. Would be interesting if JASSM/ LRASM make the cut.

Let’s review the three primary high speed weapons the US Air Force is investing in. First up is the Stand-In-Attack-Weapon. The ‘Stand-In’ in SiAW refers to the intended platforms employing the weapon and not the weapon itself. SiAW is a high speed weapon designed to fit inside internal bays of 5th and 6th generation fighters and other strike aircraft (B-21). USAF’s interim SiAW is an AARGM-ER derived weapon with additional USAF specified enhancements. Relative to the AGM-88 HARM, AARGM-ER more than doubles the range within a similar time-off flight (much faster weapon). Top speed is expected to be somewhere b/w Mach 4-5 and its intended target set includes Theater Ballistic Missile Launchers, Land Attack and Anti-Ship Cruise Missile Launchers, Jammers, Anti-Satellite Systems, and Integrated Air Defense Systems. Several of these targets would be time-sensitive or of high value with the combination of advanced stealthy aircraft able to penetrate closer to the target, and the high speed nature of the weapon allowing successful targeting. USAF intends on buying 3,000 SiAWs. 4/7

📩 Drop us a note to schedule a meeting.

USN seems to have all the pieces in place to support a July IOC for the AARGM-ER. IOC follows a 2019 EMD contract to develop & field the weapon. AARGM-ER's F-35A integration for the USAF's Interim Stand In Attack Weapon #SiAW effort is expected to conclude in FY25.

The US Navy has moved its AARGM-ER IOC estimate from September 2023 to March 2024. While the AARGM-ER test program has executed flawlessly the six month delay is on account of delays in test asset delivery, developmental testing & weapons safety certifications. #AARGM

I anticipate almost all export orders for this family to include the Navy’s AARGM-ER configuration as opposed to the USAFs Stand In Attack Weapon #SiaW even though the latter would eventually be produced in much greater quantities.
Netherlands And Poland Will Get The AGM-88G AARGM-ER.
With the acquisition of their first anti-radiation weapon, both countries are improving their capability to perform Suppression/Destruction of Enemy Air Defense missions.
