@mer__edith I whole heartedly believe this to be a poor decision from a technical, practical & adoption standpoint.
This choice will drive users away en mass. In many cases, we cant decide how/when we HAVE to use SMS, but keeping all coms in one space keeps ppl.

I have used the app since beginning and have converted people to it.
SMS integration provided real value:
- Unified Messaging, Search, etc
- Encrypted sms backup
- Trusted app for OTP/2FA texts
- Ensured Notifications

Apple can support sms without denying other sms apps on iOS. They actively deny other sms apps! Why? Control.
@signalapp should support sms if for no other reason than so that users don’t have to use insecure sms apps from unscrupulous companies.

Consider: Some texts will always come through sms – government, banking, emergency, initial contacts.
Every other app is, strictly speaking, optional.
He who controls the required text app, has the best chance of getting -- and keeping -- the user.

FB, Apple and Google know users desire simplicity, and want their apps to be the go-to place for ALL messaging.
These are very smart companies. They don’t support sms because they like sms. They support sms to capture the user.

Apple famously will not give up default sms. Why? Because of its strategic value.
And Google is using RCS as a way to capture sms and convert it without the nontechnical user's understanding. Google will get that metadata.

Signal leaders should have realized the value they are providing by having a trusted sms app. Not just the encrypted backup, but the app itself. Phone makers have been shown to secretly harvest sms info! @signalapp for sms was safe, trusted.
