wait, wait... the #gokstad (cf. image) does *not* appear to have them ?? And I don't see any on the #tune, but many of the #Skuldelev and the #gislinge do have them. So, what about the #oseberg? I wonder what determines this feature's presence 🤔 #knowyourvikingship

Neat illustration of the existing strakes on the #Skuldelev 3 #vikingship : the red shows the planks added at the time of construction, and the purple are those that were added as repairs. Note how they are clustered around the center. (📷 = Vikingeskibsmuseet i Roskilde)

A sailboat's #polar diagram shows a boat's speed vs. it's heading vs. the wind. Each boat has it's own diagram, and this is important to know when planning regattas (or battle *ahem*) so you can plan your routes. See data for the #Skuldelev 2 here: https://t.co/khjXe40Wga

So I made a sail like the one in the bayeux tapestry to see how it would look IRL on a boat (#Skuldelev 3). I tried a fan on it to see how it would act, but the wind was not powerful enough for me to see how it acts. BUT looks really easy to jump out of.. #redneck #archeology 🤣

Zin in! Een van de topstukken van #WijVikingen wordt op dit moment netjes in de lak gezet. De levensgrote replica van het oorlogsschip #Skuldelev V wordt mede gebouwd door studenten van @rocfriesepoort. Vanaf 19 oktober kan je hem zien in de nieuwe tentoonstelling Wij Vikingen.

In 2007, the #SeaStallion, which is a reconstructed Viking ship #Skuldelev 2, sailed form #Roskilde to Dublin. The ship successfully arrived back to its home, after the remains were found in the Roskilde Fjord. The journey led to a discovery of how their ships behaved at open sea
