#SlippingIntoHistory This is a grain register sent from Guangzhi County to Xuanquanzhi Relay Station in the 11th month of the 2nd year of the Shenjue reign (December 60 BC). It records in detail the food supplied when the Xuanquan stable assistants escorted and received the Rizhu King as he passed through Guangzhi. Behind what appears to be a routine record of meals, lay a historic transformation that shook the Western Regions.
#SlippingIntoHistory This is a wooden slip from Xuanquanzhi Relay Station in Dunhuang, dated to the 5th year of the Yongguang reign of the Han Dynasty, or 39 BC. It records what we might call a “diplomatic complaint.” After a series of improper actions by the Jiuquan authorities, the envoys of the King of Kangju formally lodged their grievance with the Han court and asked for its intervention. The Han court responded swiftly, taking the concerns of these envoys from the Western Regions seriously.
#SlippingIntoHistory One day in 65 BC, the official in charge of Xuanquan Relay Station received a written order. It said that the King of Qiuci and his wife would soon arrive at Xuanquanzhi Relay Station, and set out requirements for the reception, room arrangements, and related ceremonies at the station. Why would the Han court receive a king and queen from the Western Regions with such high courtesy? The answer lies in the queen’s background.
#SlippingIntoHistory One day in late autumn of 51 BC, Xuanquanzhi Relay Station received an unusual traveler: a white-haired Han Chinese woman, accompanied by a general, nobles, and several attendants from Wusun. She was Princess Jieyou, who had married far away into the Western Regions 50 years before and had now been granted permission to return home. This Han-Dynasty slip from Xuanquan has preserved a tangible historical trace of her journey home.
#SlippingIntoHistory Since the 20th century, as bamboo and wooden slips have continued to be excavated and studied in Gansu and across China, the study of slips has gradually developed into a systematic discipline. Vast numbers of original documents provide irreplaceable first-hand sources for research into the political institutions, social governance, military affairs, diplomacy, ethnic interactions, and Silk Road trade of the Han period.
This video series will bring you closer to these bamboo and wooden slips that have survived across millennia, and uncover the stories behind them.
