Bon dia. In the absence of an hotel buffet breakfast I had to search for morning sustenance elsewhere. This serving, just around the corner, isn’t too shabby and should set me up for a long day of volcano hiking. #SlowPyrenees
One of today’s many, munificent pleasures was gazing upwards to watch fierce, hurricane force winds pluck plumes of powdery spindrift from the summit ridges and cast it, spiralling, up into the heavens, like a whirling dervish or dust devil.

The skies began to clear mid-morning but, as if to compensate, a bitter wind blew in hard from the north. Looking across the Val d’Unarre, volume up!

The first half of today’s hike was a long slog up a paved road to the precioso pueblo of Son
(population 17), most notable for its fine Romanesque church of St Peter the Apostle.

Bona tarda. Due to work commitments I was late out the traps today so I’m enjoying a gentle stroll above the Val d’Àneu. A few snow flurries around but nothing of substance. Looking south east towards Lo Calbo (2290m), tomorrow’s destination. Weather permitting.

The money I’ve saved on accommodation I shall splash out on evening meals, seems like a not unreasonable quid pro quo. This evening I’ll dine in the hotel restaurant, here’s the menu.

Bona tarda! It’s been thirteen long, long days since I last set foot on a mountain, God only knows how I’ve coped without their presence. Fortunately the interminable wait is over and I’m off to Esterri d’Àneu for a weekend of #SlowPyrenees action. Snow is forecast at low levels!
Sadly, all good things come to an end but I depart Scotland enthused and empowered. I’ve booked another course for February 2027 but fear not fellow orophiles, you won’t have to wait long for more mountain action. Back to Spain on Thursday, #SlowPyrenees returns next week.
But worry not, fellow Orophiles! An extended #SlowPyrenees returns in March and February is brimful with mountains. I’m back in the English Lake District then a winter mountaineering course in the Scottish Highlands. It’s looking good already!

Bon dia. Another 10cm last night, depths are crazy high up. But this morning it turned to sleet and a thaw’s set in. The cloud is low and there’s been substantial drifting so I’ve decided to return to Lleida, I’ve writing to do.

Bon dia. Another 10cm last night, depths are crazy high up. But this morning it turned to sleet and a thaw’s set in. The cloud is low and there’s been substantial drifting so I’ve decided to return to Lleida, I’ve writing to do.

Scores on the doors: just 400m of up and 400m of down but a reasonably respectable 28.1 km of along. More tomorrow, weather permitting.

Due to the mist and snow Plan C was also a non-runner so I implemented Plan D which involved a pechuga apanada at Vielha’s fab and friendly Colombian cafetería, Rosa de los Vientos. Highly recommended.

Sadly, Plan B, which involved a lengthy detour to a spot with splendid vistas of Aneto, also had to be abandoned. The weather’s closed in, the clouds have come down and it’s started to snow again so there’s not much to see!
