When the city doesn't realize clearing their section of sidewalk once a winter doesn't make it properly accessible 🤦♀️

Think about adding #Accessibility to what we are all fighting for
@AliVelshi in a #SmallActsOfCourage segment you could bring on @sampson_dog @servicerotties to talk about it
It's important

Thank you for this post. Although we have a big bark, the reality is that most businesses, governments, and decision makers don't tend to listen to people with disabilities. Or they do, and they make excuses to leave things inaccessible.
A lot of people are quick to support the idea of inclusion and accessibility. Until it involves their favorite coffee or ice cream shop or neighborhood pub. If these places happen to be inaccessible, then a lot of people suddenly are OK with excluding those who are physically different.
A business that we can't safely get into isn't overly concerned about losing us as customers. However, when someone able bodied goes in and speaks to them about accessibility, it has weight. It's not just businesses, though. Schoolyards and playgrounds are often still inaccessible. Kids with disabilities still get left on the sidelines. Parents and family members with disabilities can't play with their children. Teachers with disabilities can't utilize these areas. Housing is very seldom visitable (meaning the main floor has an accessible entry and reasonably accessible bathroom), and housing that is barrier free to reside in is almost impossible to find. Community housing has a small percentage of barrier free units, but there's usually a wait list, and they often aren't ideal environments.
Change is really slow to happen. But the more people that bring it up, the more likely it is change will happen. That might mean asking local businesses to become more accessible. It might mean talking to city councilors about inaccessible areas. It might mean reporting things that are barriers, like uncleared snow or a ramp that's blocked. The more people that promote removing barriers, the sooner it happens. And one day, that will make a big difference to you or someone you love. Being able bodied is only temporary. Age will change your abilities. An accident or illness can make your world inaccessible right away. It doesn't need to be that way.
We advocate for accessibility because we need to. We push for inclusion because we'd love to be part of our community, but we can't visit people in their homes, we can't get into a lot of businesses and there's stuff we'd love to participate in but there's too many barriers. But in our eyes, the superheroes are the people who don't face those same barriers, yet take the time to advocate for those of us who do. True super heros are doing little things to make the world better for better for others.

Mom here: This week brought a flood of emotions I was unprepared for. I had prepared myself mentally for Sampson's retirement, and had gone though the process methodically. Upon returning from New York, and having the film crew leave our house, I felt a heaviness in my chest, and tears that I wouldn't allow to fall. Thinking I was just exhausted I pushed it aside. But the realization finally set in. The tears fell. I was prepared mentally, and stoic about the decision to retire Sampson, the reality is, I was unprepared emotionally.
Simply put - I miss my partner. The floofy face that was my guiding light for 9 1/2 years, the bond we have, and the love. I counted on his presence every second of those 9 1/2 years, and Sampson loves his job. He and I have traveled a road fraught with obstacles, and triumphs - side by side.
While it may be perceived that retirement is a liberation of sorts, this human sentiment of retirement may not be similar to how assistance animals experience retirement. Sampson did not perceive his working role as arduous work he wished to escape in the traditional sense that some people do. However, the trip took a toll on him, and I had to be consciously aware of his limitations, and act as HIS advocate.
Seeing his excitement to put his vest on, I will continue to allow him to work in a reduced capacity and do small excursions. Although, we will be traveling to Palm Springs, Fl, for the big Gala in January.
I am blessed to have Pax come into my life, and look forward to our future together. We are looking forward to next weekend heading to Las Vegas for the Marine Corps Ball, and he is just a loyal, work driven goofball; our bond and partnership will grow over time. But the transition is hard.
The emotional conundrum of retiring an assistance animal is an issue every handler must confront at some point of the animal's life. The cessation of a working career should be perceived as a well-deserved, positive celebration and a guarantee that the animal will enjoy the remainder of his or her life. However, retirement also marks finality and can be a difficult road for both animal and handler to navigate physically and emotionally.
The life and welfare of an assistance animal should always be kept in the highest regard. The assistance animal lives a humble life of purpose and can be the essential lifeline for a human being, a fate that nature could have never commanded. There is no question that the assistance animal must be honored treated with the utmost respect in every stage of life. As the animal transitions into retirement, the lives of both animal and handler change, but the memories and history between the two lives do not.
Robert Frost (5) once stated, “The afternoon knows what the morning never suspected.”
As I do, to try and make sense of things I don't understand - I turn to science and words. Please check out my new blog post in "Musings of a Disabled CEO":
The Path Toward Retirement for Assistance Animals: Transitioning Lives

We were getting on the elevator at the hotel when I overheard an adult telling their child 'You can't pet the doggy. He's working for her. He helps her." And then a child's whisper "Do you think she pays him a lot? With money?"
It made my ❤️ smile.
We find out tomorrow if @sampson_dog wins the Hero Dog Awards
He's already a winner for opening doors to classrooms, labs and jobs to many more smart, qualified humans who will be able to help the world

The other night we tried to get to this garbage can but the leaves made it impossible to see where the grass ended and suddenly the human had sunk a wheelchair wheel into playground sand and was firmly stuck. Thankfully HumanFriend rescued her.
Accessible playgrounds prevent stuff like this.

Sampson dedicated his life to assisting me, his Mom, to regain life and maneuver day-to-day living happy, healthy, and independent! He worked tirelessly with his it is the Best! Day! Ever attitude to guide me through an education, help recover from a brain injury, and find the strength to build and maintain a company to help others! With his help our endeavors have helped countless individuals needing a role model, needing assistance and guidance, or needing someone to be there who understood and could be their voice. Our endeavors will change the landscape of science culture - one paw print at a time! Sampson is SO MUCH MORE than the bio - he is a Hero Dog to countless people across the globe! He is beyond question my Hero Dog for sure!
We spent nearly 9-years working in labs and advocating for all people with disabilities with a focus on service dog handler access to science education and careers.
We traveled over 126,570 total flight miles to give presentations, lectures, and help educational institutions, governmental bodies and science organizations in the development of Laboratory Service Dog Policies and guidelines. Also, act as an advocate for individuals faced with barriers and discrimination.
We've given hundreds of webinars, and represented 100's of individuals with disabilities in the last 5-years to assist them in getting the accommodations they need. We've testified in court cases for individuals who were discriminated against.
We've developed and are working on the development of training webinars and courses with the @citiprogram on service dog's 101, service dogs in science, service dogs and first responders, and several more.
With all of your help, we've taken on systemic bias, changed policies in the top four science organizations in the country so they include laboratory service dog policy, we've changed policies in hotels and restaurants who discriminated against service dog handlers, changed training polices for several airlines and TSA, and taken on the @CDCgov most recently with the assistance of @RepCiscomani and several other US Representatives, science organizations, and service dog training organizations to amend ONE SENTENCE in the CDC biosafety guidelines being used to unjustly exclude service dog handlers from labs. Our next step on this is is a formal congressional hearing and possible legislation. AND we've written a book about the journey through all of the above due out next Spring!
Sampson helped me start a revolution to make positive changes across the globe (in eight countries) for service dog handlers seeking equal access to science - ultimately within our communities and the travel industry, by default. In doing so, when we saw an injustice, he gave me the strength and support to fight back and make changes. We see a shift in thinking and now have service dog handlers across the globe working in laboratories, getting a science education, working in the health industry, research industry, and living full lives. Sampson is a HERO DOG to so many and his legacy will live on as we continue to make the world a more inclusive place for all!
He is a positive role model, an inspiration to others, and the Ambassador for Service Dogs in Science!
I am forever grateful that I was gifted this beautiful creature to help guide me through life, help me recover and be a better person, and give the ability to help others in need! Thank you me dearest Sampson!

The bond between a Service Dog and their human is immeasurable. The Service Dogs desire to serve starts with temperament and training but is forged by love, respect, and trust.
Sampson was dedicated to his job for over 9 years. Now is now truly enjoying his retirement. But his legacy of helping so many individuals with disabilities in science who rely on a service dog for medical assistance and independence will live on and continue to change the landscape in science culture!
He did the Best! Job! Ever! With love and loyalty. He truly is a Hero Dog!

Mom says that one of the most miraculous feats demonstrated by a service dog is the ability to sense a particular medical crisis both before it occurs and before the dog’s handler is aware that such a crisis is imminent. When sensing an impending medical crisis, the dog will communicate this to his or her handler. This is critical to the handler's safety and well-being. We service dogs, that have this ability, are referred to as Medical Alert Dogs.
Three typical alerts are:
Paw – This is by far the most common alert behavior. It is easy to teach and the dogs can do it from any age. Another benefit of pawing as an alert is it is discreet and can be done when the dog is still laying down, minimizing the disruption to those around you. The paw during medical alert is very different than the typical paw presented by a pet dog seeking attention.
Nudge – The dog nudges your hand or pokes your leg.
Bringsel – A bringsel is a stuffed cylinder or a tab that the dog holds in their mouth. It can be velcroed onto someone’s beltloop or it can hang on the dog’s collar, depending on the need. The benefit to a bringsel is it is extremely distinct – the dog only holds it when it is alerting.
I know all three and use them in different situations. I never alert Mom in the lab with a nudge, as it might cause a chemical spill. So I would use a bringsel. But during every day, I would use a paw or a nudge. Sometimes I would simply place my head in her lap and look up. MY expression told Mom that she needed to take action - that might mean taking a break, sitting down be fore she passed out, leaving a setting, or taking medicine.
These alerts kept her safe, she could take care of her medical needs before they became critical, and she could continue being effective in her job, and living a happy, healthy, and independent life!
