Sampson dedicated his life to assisting me, his Mom, to regain life and maneuver day-to-day living happy, healthy, and independent! He worked tirelessly with his it is the Best! Day! Ever attitude to guide me through an education, help recover from a brain injury, and find the strength to build and maintain a company to help others! With his help our endeavors have helped countless individuals needing a role model, needing assistance and guidance, or needing someone to be there who understood and could be their voice. Our endeavors will change the landscape of science culture - one paw print at a time! Sampson is SO MUCH MORE than the bio - he is a Hero Dog to countless people across the globe! He is beyond question my Hero Dog for sure!
We spent nearly 9-years working in labs and advocating for all people with disabilities with a focus on service dog handler access to science education and careers.
We traveled over 126,570 total flight miles to give presentations, lectures, and help educational institutions, governmental bodies and science organizations in the development of Laboratory Service Dog Policies and guidelines. Also, act as an advocate for individuals faced with barriers and discrimination.
We've given hundreds of webinars, and represented 100's of individuals with disabilities in the last 5-years to assist them in getting the accommodations they need. We've testified in court cases for individuals who were discriminated against.
We've developed and are working on the development of training webinars and courses with the @citiprogram on service dog's 101, service dogs in science, service dogs and first responders, and several more.
With all of your help, we've taken on systemic bias, changed policies in the top four science organizations in the country so they include laboratory service dog policy, we've changed policies in hotels and restaurants who discriminated against service dog handlers, changed training polices for several airlines and TSA, and taken on the @CDCgov most recently with the assistance of @RepCiscomani and several other US Representatives, science organizations, and service dog training organizations to amend ONE SENTENCE in the CDC biosafety guidelines being used to unjustly exclude service dog handlers from labs. Our next step on this is is a formal congressional hearing and possible legislation. AND we've written a book about the journey through all of the above due out next Spring!
Sampson helped me start a revolution to make positive changes across the globe (in eight countries) for service dog handlers seeking equal access to science - ultimately within our communities and the travel industry, by default. In doing so, when we saw an injustice, he gave me the strength and support to fight back and make changes. We see a shift in thinking and now have service dog handlers across the globe working in laboratories, getting a science education, working in the health industry, research industry, and living full lives. Sampson is a HERO DOG to so many and his legacy will live on as we continue to make the world a more inclusive place for all!
He is a positive role model, an inspiration to others, and the Ambassador for Service Dogs in Science!
I am forever grateful that I was gifted this beautiful creature to help guide me through life, help me recover and be a better person, and give the ability to help others in need! Thank you me dearest Sampson!

If youβre changing the world, youβre working on important things. Youβre excited to get up each and every morning.
Mom once faced the possibility of no more mornings. As her service dog I gave her hope and helped rebuild her life, so that she can help others. She is grateful for the dawn of each new day, she says, I gave her that gift!

The bond between a Service Dog and their human is immeasurable. The Service Dogs desire to serve starts with temperament and training but is forged by love, respect, and trust.
Sampson was dedicated to his job for over 9 years. Now is now truly enjoying his retirement. But his legacy of helping so many individuals with disabilities in science who rely on a service dog for medical assistance and independence will live on and continue to change the landscape in science culture!
He did the Best! Job! Ever! With love and loyalty. He truly is a Hero Dog!

Mom says that one of the most miraculous feats demonstrated by a service dog is the ability to sense a particular medical crisis both before it occurs and before the dogβs handler is aware that such a crisis is imminent. When sensing an impending medical crisis, the dog will communicate this to his or her handler. This is critical to the handler's safety and well-being. We service dogs, that have this ability, are referred to as Medical Alert Dogs.
Three typical alerts are:
Paw β This is by far the most common alert behavior. It is easy to teach and the dogs can do it from any age. Another benefit of pawing as an alert is it is discreet and can be done when the dog is still laying down, minimizing the disruption to those around you. The paw during medical alert is very different than the typical paw presented by a pet dog seeking attention.
Nudge β The dog nudges your hand or pokes your leg.
Bringsel β A bringsel is a stuffed cylinder or a tab that the dog holds in their mouth. It can be velcroed onto someoneβs beltloop or it can hang on the dogβs collar, depending on the need. The benefit to a bringsel is it is extremely distinct β the dog only holds it when it is alerting.
I know all three and use them in different situations. I never alert Mom in the lab with a nudge, as it might cause a chemical spill. So I would use a bringsel. But during every day, I would use a paw or a nudge. Sometimes I would simply place my head in her lap and look up. MY expression told Mom that she needed to take action - that might mean taking a break, sitting down be fore she passed out, leaving a setting, or taking medicine.
These alerts kept her safe, she could take care of her medical needs before they became critical, and she could continue being effective in her job, and living a happy, healthy, and independent life!

Our first presentation together and our last presentation together- 9-years apart. I stood beside Mom through hundreds of others, spent 5-years in classes, 8-years in labs, went to every doctors appointment, shopping, or social event beside Mom, we traveled the nation, and advocated for positive change so that people with disabilities who rely on a service dog for medical assistance and independence get equal opportunities to science. Best! Job! Ever!

When Mom sees injustice she says, βNot on my watch!β
We need your help! Please contact, or share this message tagging your state U.S. Representative to see if they will join with their support. A link to the full letter is at the bottom of this text.
@CDCDirector Mandy Cohen has 1-more week to respond to our request to amend the current Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories (BMBL) guideline manual.
Existing language, one sentence, in the CDCβs BMBL is being misinterpreted and weaponized by over 100 educational institutions and research centers, as well as the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Department of Defense, to exclude people with disabilities from laboratories without providing considerations through individualized risk assessment or reasonable accommodations, as outlined by federal law. Our requests thus far have been ignored, so we sent a formal request from Congress members.
Next steps: A formal Congressional Hearing and Pax and Mom will speak to Congress. Legislation is a possibility. Mom will not give up until this is changed so disabled students who utilize a service dog for medical assistance get an equal and equitable opportunity at an science education and career.
The letter came from @RepCiscomaniβs office, signed by 4 other Congress members, and over a dozen science, disability, and service dog training organizations.
The current guidance states, βAnimals and plants not associated with the work being performed are not permitted in the laboratory.β This leaves no room for objective assessment for equal or equitable access and opportunities for those with disabilities who utilize a service dog.
We believe the solution would be to amend the current BMBL guidelines to state, βAnimals and plants not associated with the work being performed are not permitted in the laboratory; service dogs may be an exception based on an individualized risk assessment.β
An easy fix. A moral and ethical fix. The right thing to do.

I attended every single day of class while Mom was in college, ~ 1,800 days total. Some semesters Mom took 5 classes, plus spent 4 - 8 hours a day working in a Neuroscience lab, and I was beside her for every minute of those days. Then she spent countless hours studying and taking exams - I was there as well. I made her education possible!
Best! Job! Ever!

Sampson says, because of my assistance Mom can be independent, she can stay happy and healthy, and she can do many activities like work, shop, go out to eat, travel, and attend social events - even go to Disney World- many things non-disabled people take for granted. Service dogs are life changers, and life-savers. It is the Best! Job! Ever!
