False Information About Smart Meter Installations
Eskom has become aware of misleading videos circulating on social media containing false claims about smart meter installations and learnership opportunities. These videos are not from Eskom and contain incorrect and misleading information.
We would like to clarify the following:
1. False claims about payment for smart meter installation and learnership opportunities.
One of the videos falsely claims that Eskom is offering learnership opportunities for smart meter installations and that individuals must pay money to be included in the programme or to be transported to participate in the learnership.
This information is completely false.
Eskom is not recruiting learnership participants through individuals going door-to-door, nor are people required to pay any money to participate in Eskom learnerships. All Eskom learnerships and training opportunities are advertised through official Eskom platforms and recognised recruitment channels.
In addition, customers are not required to pay any fee for the installation of smart meters. The installation of smart meters forms part of Eskom’s programme to modernise the electricity network and improve service delivery.
Customers are therefore urged not to pay any money to individuals claiming to represent Eskom for smart meter installations or learnership opportunities. Any person requesting payment for these services is acting fraudulently.
2. False claims about radiation and monitoring devices
Another video falsely claims that smart meters emit harmful radiation and contain monitoring devices that can listen to conversations inside homes. These claims are completely untrue. Smart meters are safe and internationally approved devices used by electricity utilities across the world. They comply with strict regulatory and safety standards and do not emit harmful radiation.
Furthermore, smart meters do not contain microphones, cameras, or any devices capable of recording or listening to conversations inside homes. Their sole function is to measure electricity consumption and securely transmit meter readings to Eskom systems.
3. Purpose of smart meter installations
Smart meters are being installed to:
- Improve accurate electricity billing
- Reduce electricity theft and meter tampering
- Improve network management and reliability
- Enable faster fault detection and service restoration
Eskom urges customers to disregard misinformation circulating on social media and to rely only on information published through Eskom’s official communication platforms.
Eskom remains committed to working with communities to ensure a safe, reliable and sustainable electricity supply.
If customers encounter suspicious individuals requesting payment or spreading false information, they are encouraged to report it to Eskom through the Eskom Crime Line No 0800 11 27 22 or WhatsApp 081 333 3323.
