Small stable populations of the Black softshell turtle exist in temple ponds, and are considered holy by many religious communities in India and Bangladesh, and are protected and worshipped.
Tourists/pilgrims especially come to visit them.

Did you know that Indian flapshell turtles and their eggs are heavily exploited for food and that it’s the most common Indian softshell in the meat trade industry? Artifact trade is also a problem as these turtles are also sacrificed for their shells.

Not much is known about Asiatic softshell turtle, except its morphology. Researchers even think that Amyda cartilaginea might be a species complex consisting of three species and several subspecies that haven’t been described yet.

This is a Leith's softshell turtle (N. leithii). Did you know that the reddish-orange colouration you see on its head is a dead giveaway for its ID? No other Nilssonia sp. has that orange colour, especially when they are juveniles!

This species looks really similar to N. hurum but the size of its head is larger & the black reticulation on the head is less distinct.

This species is endemic to peninsular India in the Indian states of
Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Odisha.
