My first @TheSolarCan and I ❤️ it. So excited to find somewhere in the house to hang it- such a unique way to document the year!
My first #SolarCan experiment! The Solar Can was mounted on a pole in our garden and left for 368 days, where photo paper was being exposed to the Sun via a pinhole. The paper was removed, scanned, inverted and processed to give this final image.
A few #Solarcan harvests from (or near) the #wintersolstice
1. 2nd Floor classroom at Appleton East, looking south. Late Aug - Dec 19.
2. SE, installed Sept 29 and removed Dec 18. This was the best exposure, showing leaves on the tree for a little while
3. South, Oct 19 - Dec 21
Installing a @TheSolarCan pinhole camera between the winter solstice and spring equinox is a unique time in the N hemisphere, with no leaves on trees and the sun isn't too high, so it gets fully captured #pinholephotography #solarcan

So I decided to go for the complete lap, & here’s the result of a 31.6 million second (give or take a few!) exposure😀.

This is the most extraordinary capture using a #Solarcan by the incredibly talented @nicspenceryork - but what exactly are we seeing?
It's called an "Analemma" and is the result of a year's hard work by Nic. Every few days at exactly the same time Nic uncovered the Solarcan pinhole and let sunlight pass through. Over the course of 12 months these little exposures create a figure of 8 pattern, showing the Sun's changing position in our sky.
We promised that anyone able to create an analemma with a Solarcan would be sent a bag of goodies - and Nic, we can assure you that one is on its way to you!

I think the gap in the path just below top is clouds though, as the eclipsed sun was just after 1pm so would have been higher (& just out of shot😢)
Will have to better calculate the tilt angle for my #SolarCan next time!

I 🩷 long exposure photos of roads & motorways with headlight trails. We've done @TheSolarCan pointing forward (s) before but wanted to angle it to the road to see if it captured headlights as we live on a busy road. It didn't but was fun anyway!

#Solarcan hide. The whole area is a dumping ground for old mining equipment, train cars and parts, etc. It's a popular hang out and mischief site so I was pleased that nobody spotted and/or messed with the can.

11 month exposure, Jan-Dec.
Each line is the path of the sun for that day. You can spot when it was cloudy. The can shifted at some point in the year, creating those smears in the foreground.
