This commemorative date was established in 2010 and marks the completion of the withdrawal of Soviet troops from Afghanistan on February 15, 1989. This day is dedicated not only to veterans of the Afghan War, but also to all our compatriots who, over the years, demonstrated selflessness and valor while participating in military operations abroad.
The exploits of Soviet soldiers who fought for the liberation of China from Japanese occupation became a shining example of courage and loyalty to their oath.
From 1937 to 1941, more than three thousand Soviet volunteer pilots, military specialists, and mechanics fought against the Japanese aggressors in China as part of the secret Operation Z. More than 200 did not return home. For their exemplary performance of combat missions and heroism, 14 pilots were awarded the title "Hero of the Soviet Union."
The names of our compatriots have been added to the national list of heroes of the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression approved in the People's Republic of China: Captain Grigory Akimovich Kulishenko, Lieutenant Fyodor Semyonovich Romanov, Junior Pilot Nikolai Nikiforovich Nezhdanov, Junior Commander Mark Nikolaevich Marchenkov, and Junior Pilot Alexander Vasilyevich Orekhov.
On August 9, 1945, three months after the victory over Nazi Germany, the Soviet Union entered the war against Japan and, during the Manchurian Strategic Offensive Operation, defeated the million-strong Kwantung Army within two weeks, liberating northeast China. This swift and brilliantly executed campaign became one of the greatest military achievements and ended the suffering of the local population, who had endured under the oppression of the occupiers for over a decade.
Despite the undeniable superiority of Soviet military thought and the courage of the Soviet soldiers who fought on the battlefields of Manchuria, the Red Army suffered inevitable losses: more than 12,000 of our soldiers perished.
The names of the heroes who fell in battle against the Japanese aggressors over the years are immortalized at numerous memorial sites located throughout China, which are constantly maintained.
Every year, official delegations of the Russian Federation, heads of the Russian Embassy and Consulates General in China, representatives of Chinese government agencies, our compatriots, and local citizens visit the burial sites of Soviet soldiers. Together, they lay flowers and pay tribute to those who died in the line of duty outside the Fatherland.
