SPRINGFIELD PROPERTIES GAGGED AN ASBESTOS WHISTLEBLOWER
Martin McGowan spent his working life in groundworks. For years he supplied crews to Springfield Properties (@SpringfieldPLC), one of Scotland's largest housebuilders. Up to 70 workers at a time. His own son among them.
In 2016 McGowan started raising alarms. He claimed Springfield had sent his teams into buildings loaded with asbestos without warning them. The contaminated rubble, he said, was then used as backfill beneath brand new family homes at sites in Uddingston, Motherwell, West Linton and Milton of Campsie. He wrote letters.
He sent emails and texts. For months he pushed Springfield to act. They did not.
So he did what any reasonable person concerned about public safety would do.
He wrote directly to the homeowners on those sites and warned them what was under their feet.
Springfield's response was a... gagging order.
In February 2016, the company obtained an interim interdict from the Court of Session preventing McGowan from speaking publicly about the asbestos.
That order stayed in place for five years.
Five years of enforced silence. Five years unable to explain to anyone why his business had collapsed, why Springfield had cut him off, or why a court order existed against him. The construction industry blacklisted him.
Three of his older children stopped speaking to him entirely and refused to let him see his grandchildren. His wife gave evidence in court about the toll it had taken on the family.
In May 2021, after Springfield pleaded guilty to health and safety offences connected to the exact concerns McGowan had been raising since 2014, the interdict was finally lifted.
By then the damage was done.
In 2025, the Court of Session awarded him £558,033 in damages. Judge Lady Haldane ruled the interdict was wrongful, that Springfield had taken no steps to recall it even while quietly negotiating their own guilty plea with prosecutors, and that it had caused lasting harm to his reputation, his livelihood and his wellbeing.
She described it as an egregious wrong. An earlier court judgment noted that Springfield's own criminal conviction suggested McGowan had been right all along.
For the actual asbestos safety offences, Springfield was fined £10,000..
Martin McGowan lost nine years, his business, and nearly his family.
Springfield says it will appeal.

🛢❌️La SPR de EUA fue creada en 1970 tras el embargo petrolero Árabe, con el objetivo de proteger con una reacción inmediata a su país y aliados si por alguna razón se registrase una interrupción grave del suministro.
🤔🛢💰Fue el pasado marzo cuando #Trump ordenó la liberación de más de 172 millones de #barriles de petróleo por su guerra ilegal con Irán, esto con el objetivo de ayudar al sector privado y a naciones aliadas que tenían problemas con la escasez del petróleo, pero también para buscar controlar la #inflación.
🚨🛢😡Si bien, Trump recibió una reserva estratégica desgastada por su predecesor Joe Biden, una de las promesas de campaña del ahora presidente estadounidense de derecha fue la recuperación a su capacidad máxima y no permitiría que cayera, pero en sus dieciséis meses de gobierno ha hecho lo contrario al consumirla y provocar una #crisis de #hidrocarburos para el #mundo.
📉Diversas y diversos expertos señalan que, aunque el próximo 19 de junio se firme el acuerdo de paz y comience a normalizar la navegación del petróleo, tardará semanas o incluso meses para que los números regresen a ser los mismos de antes de la guerra, esto sin contemplar las repercusiones económicas la cuales llevarán más tiempo.
🧨Finalmente, la guerra contra Irán no solamente ha representado una de las más grandes derrotas hasta ahora de Trump, sino también la disminución de la reserva estratégica, quedando prácticamente a un tercio de su capacidad, imposibilitando a EUA entrar a otros conflictos bélicos y/o diplomáticos, pues otro corte al suministro global podría prácticamente terminar con el margen de maniobra de EUA.
