The Network-First Approach To Building A Business
I fly into San Fransisco at 9:32am on a Friday…
I call a $70 Uber to check into the Grand Hyatt…
Then I mentally prepare myself for what’s next…
But the truth?
I don’t know what’s next… literally.
I paid $3,000 for a ‘mystery event…’
The host doesn’t tell me ANYTHING about it.
All he gives me is a date, time, and location…
Then a little note that says ‘meet us in the hotel lobby, things will slowly start to make sense…’
Me and 30 strangers paid for a weekend surprise. Now people might think I’m stupid for doing this. They’re right. But I don't care about the event.
I care about the 30 strangers who are going.
30 people crazy enough to pay $3k for a surprise?
That’s a room I want to be in. I thought it would be a high ROI decision. In fact I knew it would be.
Just 50 minutes after walking into that hotel lobby…
I close a deal for a game-changing project.
Easiest deal of my life too.
A deal that gave me a lot of reputation in my industry too.
How’d I do it?
Because I look at networking different than most:
I don’t put myself OUT there…
I put myself IN there…
Let me explain.
People treat networking like a second thing. They do it after their most productive work. You’ll do it if you’re not totally drained after an 8-hour day. Business first, networking second.
But what if there’s a way you could flip it?
Every time I do this – good things happen.
• My biggest clients…
• My most successful projects…
• My most enjoyable moments…
… have ALL come from networking first.
I’m calling it the Network-First Approach.
This approach creates a compounding effect on your reputation. Your reputation spreads. Then magic starts to happen. People DM you. People ‘hear’ about you. People have an idea of you before they even meet you.
But the only problem?
This won’t work for most people.
Their networking strategy is about getting OUT there:
• More reach…
• More visibility…
• More exposure…
I’m not saying ‘getting out there’ is bad. But it’s not targeted. This is why networking doesn’t work for most – they meet too many of the wrong people. We’re trying to build a business not become social butterflies.
But I won’t even say it’s about meeting the ‘right’ people.
That sounds a little pretentious.
It’s about meeting people who WANT to meet you.
When I walk into that hotel lobby, introduce myself to someone, and start asking people about their lives…
It quickly turns into them telling ME about projects they’re working on, problems they’re dealing with, and people they’re trying to help.
And guess what?
I happen to know how to help them.
It’s uncanny how often this happens…
But this is what it means to get IN there.
You get into a room where people want to meet you.
Warren Buffet says ‘don’t paddle harder, just get into a better boat.’
And @PeterNicson says ‘don’t try to change the people you’re talking to, just change the room you’re in.’
While I’m at it…
I lied. It wasn’t me and 30 strangers. It was me, 30 strangers, and Nic. In fact Nic is the one that allowed me to close that deal so easily. Knowing hims has led to many more deals too.
Deals that have changed my BUSINESS.
Good example of the Network-First Approach.
Nic knows this stuff better than anyone - go follow him.
So if you’re networking with the best intentions…
But it’s just not working out for you…
Then you might just need to get into a different room. A room that WANTS you. I'll talk about exactly how to do this another day. I just want to show you a different way to do a common thing. A way that flips everything on its head.
Do things differently to get different results.
Time to go get in there.
