🟥 🌀 The Fujiwhara Effect
It is a rare but fascinating meteorological phenomenon involving the interaction between two nearby cyclonic vortices.
❤️ 🔁 #FujiwharaEffect #StormDance
🎞 @TheHistoryPage1
Such as tropical cyclones (hurricanes or typhoons), extratropical cyclones, or low-pressure systems.
It manifests as a dynamic "dance" where the two vortices begin to orbit each other around a common center of mass, often closing the distance between their low-pressure cores and potentially leading to deflection, merger, or absorption.
Named after Japanese meteorologist Sakuhei Fujiwhara, who first described it in 1921 based on laboratory experiments with water vortices, the effect is most commonly observed in the northwestern Pacific basin due to the higher frequency of simultaneous tropical cyclones there, though it occurs less often in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans.
Meteorologically, it is characterized by the mutual attraction and rotational influence of the cyclones' circulations, which can alter their tracks, intensify or weaken one system relative to the other, and complicate forecasting.
The interaction typically becomes noticeable when the vortices are within about 1,400 km (870 miles) of each other, with acceleration in rotation rates occurring at closer ranges like 650 km (400 miles).
Outcomes vary: equal-sized cyclones may symmetrically orbit a midpoint before merging; an unequal pair sees the smaller vortex circling the larger one, often resulting in absorption and a potentially stronger combined system; or they may simply deflect each other without merging.
This can lead to stalled storm paths, increased rainfall over affected regions, or heightened risks from intensified winds and surges.
▶️ The Fujiwhara Effect arises from fundamental fluid dynamics principles applied to atmospheric vortices.
It forms when two cyclonic systems, both rotating counterclockwise in the Northern Hemisphere (or clockwise in the Southern), approach within a critical distance, typically around 1,350 km (about 12 degrees of latitude), allowing their tangential wind fields and pressure gradients to interact.
Initially observed in Fujiwhara's 1920s tank experiments, where two vortices in water naturally tended toward symmetry by orbiting a shared axis, the process in the atmosphere follows a similar progression;
▪️ Proximity and Initial Attraction: As the cyclones draw near, the outer wind circulations of each begin to influence the other's steering currents.
The low-pressure cores create a mutual gravitational-like pull, narrowing the gap between them due to the conservation of angular momentum and vorticity (the measure of rotation in the fluid).
▪️ Orbital Motion: The vortices start cyclonically rotating around their combined center of mass, akin to two planets in a binary system.
Rotation speeds up as they close in, driven by the intensification of relative vorticity and the Coriolis effect, which amplifies the curving paths.
▪️ Resolution Phase: Depending on size and strength, the interaction resolves with the smaller system orbiting and merging into the larger (common in unequal pairs), full coalescence into a single vortex (in equal pairs), or separation after deflection.
Environmental factors like wind shear or ocean temperatures can influence the duration and intensity.
This effect underscores the chaotic yet predictable nature of cyclone dynamics, often posing challenges for weather models.
