#strongfirstresilient: Kneeling Hip Flexor Stretch with a Kettlebell Overhead
Hold a kettlebell overhead (e.g. right foot back, kettlebell in the right hand.). Lift your spine, arm, and the kettlebell up with your hip.
“Holding a weight overhead enforces the upright bearing necessary for stretching the hip flexors—which makes for a great drill.” — Pavel, Super-Joints

#strongfirstresilient: The Brettzel
“This stretch helps people open up through the torso, shoulders, and hips in one combo move.”
"The benefits of this stretch demonstrate a three-dimensional chain of events that often play off of each other.
You will expose yourself to any quadricep or hip flexor tightness on the left leg.
You will also expose yourself to any piriformis, glute, or low back tightness with the right hip flexed position.
Lastly, once this position is maintained, rotation will expose you to any T-spine rotation deficit. Thoracic spine mobility plays heavily in shoulder mechanics and may be the underlying cause for shoulder problems.
At no time should you strain your neck, but only use your neck turn and your ‘eye look’ to complement the shoulder rotation that you are executing.
...
You can use 'The Brettzel' stretch as a super-set. The definition of a super-set is usually a secondary activity that works a reciprocal muscle group or an alternate exercise that enhances the quality of movement, body awareness and reflex stabilization. The best way to get reflex stabilization and have your stabilizers work automatically is to improve mobility. Most of the times when both flexibility and mobility are limited, prime movers secondarily assume the role of stabilizers. This creates the illusion of tightness and increased muscle tone against stretching.
If you immediately elongate these prime mover muscles and then proceed with stabilization activities, like a single-leg deadlift with the alternate arm, or a Half Get-Up, you will give your stabilizers an opportunity to assume their primary role, thus removing the obligation of prime movers to work in less than optimal range of motion. Eventually, you can combine this stretch with a full Turkish Get-Up to appreciate the benefit of a mobility-stability super-set."

From the #StrongFirstRESILIENT workshop: Brettzel
„This exercise increases thoracic mobility while challenging the opposite anterior hip.“ – Functional Movement
The stretch was named after after Brett Jones @brettejones, StrongFirst Master Certified Instructor and DEO.
This is one of the many versions that I personally preferred, which I learned from Brett in 2012.
One of my all-time favorite and go-to stretches!
More about Brettzel:
„Simple exercises and stretches will often expose you to left-right asymmetries and imbalances in your body.
Strength training in the presence of asymmetries and imbalances will often reinforce them and make them harder to overcome.
Therefore, using simple drills and stretches to balance the body and remove asymmetries is at the heart of this simple, yet complex philosophy.
And the Brettzel is a key piece in the #FMS toolbox for discovering and removing such asymmetries and imbalances.“

From the #strongfirstresilient manual: Deep knee bends
“Stand erect, heels together, feet turned out. Extend arms right and left from shoulders and sink down, bending the knees outwards and rising on toes, until you are almost squatting on your heels. Return to first position and repeat bend with arms stretched in front. Return and sink again with arms stretched above head.” (Hackenschmidt)
“… no one should use weights until he can perform the deep knee bend fifty times in succession without weights. In order to perform the exercise correctly, it is necessary to cultivate your sense of balance.” (Calvert)
“Repeat these three performances daily for first week, and then perform two of each and so on.” (Hackenschmid)
He promises that it is “one of the best leg exercises in the world”.
Add deep knee bends to your “morning recharge.”

#strongfirstresilient: Jefferson Curl
“Weighted Roll Up” aka (Tommy Kono’s) “Loosening Deadlift” is today best known, thanks to the renowned gymnastic coach and huge proponent of this exercise Coach Sommer, as Jefferson Curl or J-curl.
It is similar to what the old-timers called “stiff legged deadlift”, but they are some important differences. Coach Sommer said he doesn't know the origin of the name and says that it is an “old powerlifting exercise.”
This exercise is not for everybody. If you are already in pain, J-curl is not going to help. Same applies to flexion intolerant people.
If you are healthy and already “entry level strong” (SFL Barbell deadlift strength test standard), please meet the J-curl.

Low Bridge Get-up from the #strongfirstresilient curriculum
Roll to elbow. Extend the hip of the bent leg. Repeat.
Imagine your thigh of the bent leg, torso, and head are a rope: try to separate both ends of this rope, i.e., the knee of the bent leg and crown of your head.
Brett Jones @brettejones, StrongFirst DOE, explains, and adds some important details:
“By bridging at the elbow, you get a ‘pure’ hip extension and avoid the tendency to ‘roll’ into an over-extended position at the back.
Also, remember to push your elbow down into the ground to better position the down arm and shoulder for the bridge.
Does this mean that you cannot perform a bridge at the hand (high bridge)? Or that we’ve changed the get-up testing standards? No. But I do recommend that you experiment with these options—be curious about what you might learn in these new positions.”

Kettlebell Hack squat drawing from an old manual
Excellent drill for bulletproof knees and opening the hips - if you do it correctly, and warning, it is not easy.
