@BJP4India has been too defensive, not since June, but for the last 10 years.
The aggression of @narendramodi 2014 rallies did not translate into equally aggressive governance. Ever since they were jabbed by #SuitBootKiSarkaar and withdrew the #LandAcquisitionBill, it has been an underconfident government constantly looking over its shoulder. Even minority governments of Vajpayee and UPA1 looked more in charge.
To be fair, the last 10 years' performance has been fairly decent. Demonetisation did not work but #GST, #TripleTalaq and #Article370 abolition did. Ram Mandir was won and #CAA enacted. All the while maintaining a decent economic growth record.
However, performance in media/ public eye has been lacklustre. Loss of stalwarts like Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley did not help. The completely bogus fear-mongering during #CAAProtest was not adequately countered and culminated in the #DelhiRiots.
#FarmerProtests/ blockade, led by a small voiceferous minority tested the Government. Fear of losing UP elections, like they did after Mandsaur firing, prevented them from taking decisive action against the illegal encroachment of highways. Unable to counter the false narrative, the withdrawal of Farm laws sapped the Government of its authority. It seemed like they could be held hostage by a few thousand hooligans on the roads.
It seems BJP did not create a strong enough digital ecosystem, inspite of having an early mover advantage. If a pack of Dhruv Rathee lies and half-truths could get tens of millions of views, the global Left-Liberal-Islamist-Khalistani ecosystem is working wonders. The #ConstitutionInDanger and #EndOfReservations misinformation campaign again succeeded for the opposition in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
With a reduced majority, @BJP4India is now facing hooliganism inside the Parliament. Opposition has been controlling the narrative and the Government seems to be in damage control mode. West-Bengal and Kerala are behaving like sovereign states and beating up ED/ CBI officials, BJP voters as if they are from an enemy state.
GoI needs to do better, grab the initiative back. To start with:
1. Not enough to arrest corrupt politicians, cases need to be pursued aggressively and brought to conclusion/ conviction - especially against @ArvindKejriwal and @RahulGandhi.
2. Law and Order needs to take center-stage. West-Bengal's antics deserve President's Rule, even if it is later overturned by the Supreme Court.
3. Central Government has tremendous resources. Media spend, both in India and overseas, needs to go up manifold. Social media presence needs strengthening - both with money and manpower. Quality as well as quantity of coverage of Government's policies/ debunking Opposition's propaganda needs to improve.
4. Doles need to go up. Winning elections and public goodwill is important, even at the expense of economic logic, especially when the opposition (eg in Karnataka) does not shy away from promising the moon.
5. No need to antagonise the self-declared middle class with regressive taxation policies. Policy objectives (eg cooling down stock markets and diverting household savings to banks) can be achieved through other means rather than hurting your most loyal vote bank.
6. Give the opposition an opportunity to protest on the Government's agende - Judicial reforms, Police reforms, #UCC, disinvestment, #NRC, undoing UPAs amendment to #WakfAct , revoking the #PlacesOfWorshipAct etc. - the list is very long.
